Portrayal of War and Women in Bernard Shaw’s Arms and the Man
George Bernard Shaw’s Arms and the Man is a play about the War between the Serbs and the Bulgarians. The story shows Bluntschili, a Serbian mercenary being rescued by the protagonist Raina. Raina of the famous Petkoff family also falls in love with Captain Sergius who manages to achieve a great victory for the Serbs at Silivintza. All other games take place in the Petkoff family home. Bluntschili returns home and returns Raina’s father’s shirt. It contained a picture of Raina and the words: ‘To my Chocolate Soldier’. When Raina’s father wanted the shirt, he was able to escape skillfully and remove the word.
War is presented as a semi-comic anti by Shaw. Both the comic side and the tragic side of war are shown with a tinge of truth. Raina’s room was taken over by Serbian mercenary Blutnschili. He is covered in mud and blood and is on the run from Bulgaria. Raina felt sorry for him and protected him even though he is from Bulgaria. When the Bulgarian soldiers entered his room, they carefully hid him behind a curtain. Raina is becoming a pacifist.
As a mercenary soldier Bluntschili is portrayed in a funny way. His revolver has no bullets and like a schoolboy he carries chocolates. When Raina gives him chocolate to eat, he ends up emptying the carton by wiping it with his hands and finishing it all. Raina loves him a lot and calls him: ‘My Chocolate Soldier’. Bluntschili is a child archetype who is not overly concerned with the dangers of war. When his life is in danger, he takes shelter in Raina’s room. Through Bluntschili we understand that war is a sad, ugly joke, a volcano that harms people’s minds and bodies. Bluntschili is not worried about which side will win the battle. He is not brave enough to defend himself and tries to save his skin. Through Raina, we understand that even war enemies can be friends, it is human nature to be kind to the other. Raina is a prophet of non-violence although her romantic interests meet with men in war and being brave, courageous and courageous.
Raina’s potential husband, Sergius, is known as a brave warrior. By defying the orders of his superiors, he formed a brave cavalry force and won the battle of the Bulgarians at Silivinitza. Sergius is portrayed as a man with martial qualities. Raina’s mother and Catherine are happy with the Bulgarian victory and are proud that she will be her daughter-in-law and her husband will succeed in defeating the enemy. A large part of the battle is given the opportunity to think through this person.
The two different types of personalities involved in the war present a conflict in Shaw’s paintings. Humans are by nature peaceful and war is treated as a magical journey through Bluntschili’s character. On the other hand the horror of War is conveyed through the psyche of Sergius. There is nothing to admire in war except that it brings destruction to life and property. Shaw becomes an apostle of non-violence and questions the loyalty of nations to violence and cruelty.
Raina, the protagonist of the play, is fed on Pushkin’s love stories and operas. He is bursting with romance and there is a contradiction in his behavior where on the one hand he sees war as a pretext to defeat the enemy and fight bravely and on the other hand he has no regrets in trying to protect his enemy. He is merciful and kind to his enemy. He does this at the risk of his life. She is the archetype of a compassionate, feminine person who acts as a rebel against a conflicting culture. When he realized that Sergius, who could have won the war, he doubted whether he would be worthy. He idealizes Sergius as a hero of love. The author in Raina has created an interesting character that embodies the modern feminine culture. She also becomes attracted to Bluntschili whom she calls ‘my chocolate soldier’. Later in the play we find out that she is going to marry Blutnchili.
Catherine’s mother Raina is portrayed as a respectable housewife who supports traditional birth control. She has no idea and goes with her daughter and her father Petkoff. Catherine can be seen as a full-time mother who takes care of the family and who is proud that her daughter-in-law has achieved so much. Women would say that his behavior is old-fashioned and misogynistic. Marxists would say that his behavior is similar to the consciousness of the bourgeoisie. She is a character who submits to male goals, desires and preferences.
Louka is a housekeeper and a lover of women. When he sees a gun in Raina’s room, he hides a secret. But then he confessed to Sergius. When Sergius tries to seduce her, she strongly resists. He has an independent mind. The knowledge of the class works in his mind to the horrors and he feels that he belongs to the noble and noble people. In Marxian terms: the concept of nobility and social consciousness must be re-created as a symptom of disease.
