Analysis of Philip Levine’s Poem – "Starlight"
In the introduction, I will identify and analyze the different parts of the “star” of Philip Levine, such as, the speaker; condition; words; pictures; illustrations, etc. of poetry. In the rest of this article these previous things will be explained in detail.
I will call the speaker of the poem ‘he’ because the poet is a man. The poem’s progress is at its climax. In other words, it means change like many jobs. For example, line # 21, which shows when ‘father and son’ meet face to face (thus, allowing the child to see the starlight with his ‘head in the sky’). In addition, he asked his father a question that his father had already asked him in the poem: “Are you happy?” The speaker’s opinion suggests that he himself was the image of his father; he is growing up to be like his father, and the disease of ‘father like son’ which, in a subtle way, is shown by the following lines: “I am four years old and I get tired (line 3) – compared to – .. .but I smell the same tiredness comes from his mouth. (lines 16-17) Also, the last part of the poem confirms this fact.
Of course, the idea – as mentioned above – introduces the speaker’s thoughts on his thoughts on the poem, thus setting the tone of the poem which is very dark and gray (which is related to its title, “Starlight”) through the use of key words, such as, ” weariness; smoking; the moon rising below the ancient land; lonely; thick and choked; weariness that only rests; autumn, and the boy slept so as not to wake up. this world.”
The structure of the poem is very interesting. Well, it looks like it was written in closed form when you saw it, at first. However, upon closer inspection it can be seen that the first letters of the lines are not capitalized; only when a new sentence begins. Therefore, I think that the structure can be found in open form. Additionally, there are no visual breaks or stanzas in the poem. I wonder, does the figure represent the “tall, thin child (line 28) or the gray, gray tower of Babel (in a desperate attempt) to show itself there among the stars (line 21)?”
The theme of this poem is the comparison (both mental and physical) between the speaker and his father as shown in the above paragraphs – organized by their content – i.e. lines 8 and 22. In these lines, the question the same was asked. and both sides (which give little insight into their feelings). Additionally, lines 3 and 17 (‘fatigue’) provide an indication of their health. In interpretation, these events represent the speaker (son) ‘growing’ into his father.
Things seem to be happening in a small town. This assertion can be confirmed by line 7 – “… low above the ancient land ….” In addition, the location of this poem is thought to be in the northeast of America because of key words, such as, autumn; a summer month, and a balcony (usually, a veranda – outside the United States). Also, I removed this from the inspiration I received from reading the poem which, of course, is permanent. In addition, the experiences in this poem help me to use what has happened to me when I picture in our mind what is happening in this poem. Therefore, my response to this poem is closely related to its original literary meaning. Furthermore, my reaction to these changes is limited even though the poem’s strength lies in the tempo style.
In terms of the poem’s style/choice of words, especially the pronunciation – the words used in this poem are very clear. Except, of course, the last six lines of the poem are the words, “Are you happy?” These words are abstract and are actually the engine that drives the poem. For example, these words are at the beginning and end of the poem. Similarly, the poem is a paraphrase, except for the words above which are covered with meaning. The meaning I have translated based on the above words (respectively) is explained in the following sentences. The first words refer to the speaker’s happiness in his state of being compared to his father’s happiness in his state of being (for example, the father said “yes” to a question when the speaker hesitated to answer). The last six lines are about the transformation (meditation) of the son who is growing up to be like his father in the future (“in autumn…until the boy fell asleep and did not wake up in that world”).
Besides ‘father and son relationship’ has been a major part of this poem. This piece of writing has a lot of pictures that caught my attention. As I said before, keywords like: “the light of his cigarette, redder than the rising of the summer moon” – lines # 5 – 6 – put me in a good place of the poem. It’s hard for me to see the poem as seeing it as a movie. I must say that his poem is visual (line # 5 – 6), auditory (line # 22), olfactory (line # 25), gustatory (line # 16 – 17) and synaesthetic (line # 16 – 17).
Also, similes (especially similes) add to this poem. For example, “…smell the weariness on his breath.” – lines # 5 – 6. On the other hand, there is the use of similes and other metaphors in this poem.
On the other hand, several aspects of poetry are well represented. For example, “autumn” – line # 30 – represents aging to old age. Syntax does not have many rhymes (sounds) although rhythm and meter are maintained throughout the poem. Also, all the humor in the poem creates a dark background to the ‘starry night’ – hence, the title: “Starlight.”
Finally, this poem is written in a very high quality. The first person skillfully places me in the poem, thus making me a participant in the poem. This poem makes for interesting reading. I have been experiencing new information from the speaker.
