My Man’s Best Friend

My husband, Ginger is not an early riser. Instead by the time she wakes up, Nutmeg (me) is usually done with work, laundry and grocery shopping. To be clear, there are two things he will wake up early; landing (not crossing the country) and flying. Yesterday, it started with a morning call to say Skoki our 14.5 year old black lab was not feeling well. Ginger got out of bed and tried to set a record for running to Canmore to see her dog. He wasn’t feeling well, although a trip to the vet seemed to lift his spirits a bit, it didn’t last long.

Our black Labrador, Skoki was born in Leduc, outside of Edmonton. Ginger encouraged Nutmeg to go for a drive on the fifth Saturday, 14 years ago. Nutmeg was very sure of two things; you don’t drive to Edmonton “just for fun” and no dog lover in their right mind goes “just to look” at puppies. The long and short of it, naturally, was that Skoki made the trip back south on Highway Two to Calgary. He started in the back seat of our car, which lasted about five minutes, before he started crying. Nutmeg quickly succumbed to mother’s pressure and Skoki sat in the front seat on Nutmeg’s leg for the entire journey to her new home, and was very proud to have marked the first point in our long relationship.

From the start, Skoki is what one might describe as a headliner. In the early days, walking was determined by the will of a strong little animal, which clearly did not want to walk on the cold road. This was a dog with choice ears from day one. However, if food was involved then he had excellent ears. For many years, Skoki was a faithful companion on dog walks, runs and hikes. Most of all he loved people, although he was very careful about giving his love.

Ginger has been at school for the past 10 months and returned home two weeks ago. Skoki was in charge the whole time, he made sure his owner (Nutmeg), his dog (Jade) and the house were safe and sound. He knew that his time was almost up and his master had returned, he could tell because the piles of his belongings had started to pile up. In his own unique way, Skoki said goodbye yesterday, to his best friends. This morning, it was clear that he would never regain his strength or his beloved voice. Nutmeg took her for a drive to see the mountain views in Canmore and said goodbye. We will miss our best friend but we know he is somewhere, pretending to ignore us.

Animals are wonderful creatures. They are conscious, perceptive, carefree and independent people. it’s amazing and wonderful, how pets can truly be family members and trusted friends. For more than 14 years, our relationship with Skoki grew from the joy and happiness of puppies, mutual respect and deep love for each other. Every morning he noticed that he was missing and he was looking after us the day before. My husband did not have the opportunity to grow up with dogs. His family had cats, which are without a doubt a special personality, although often people first. Skoki was a Labrador with personality, independence and reserved love for his master, he was truly my husband’s best friend. He will be missed.
