A casual Chinwag pre-gig with Robert Lloyd while dining around the Nightingales merch table, (FYI goodies like “Bullet for Gove” t-shirts, copies of Only My Opinion, Volume I of Lloyd’s music collection, a bright orange bag. and a branded glass box!), made for a spectacular start to a rare evening in Britain’s (still) underrated club. Friend Lloyd confirmed that the upcoming event would be made up of new material, including a dozen unrecorded numbers (I admit my heart nearly sank under Taff at this point as I expected, against hope, a massive tour of the band’s backlist). In reality, this was not going to happen and Lloyd was quick to explain why he did not want to front his band Nightingales, referring to how he had turned down the actor Stewart Lee’s offer of the famous festival. a slot that was official in the crowd playing their first single Pig’s on Purpose (1982) in its entirety. Lloyd was true to his word, with “Parrafin Brain” (the debut of the Cherry Red combo which reached number 39 in the Independent Chart in April 1982), the only group to disrupt tonight’s show. And, really, since their most recent album Mind over Matter (2015) reveals the inspiring Lloyd still in mortal combat with his muse, who can doubt his intentions?

For the uninitiated (aka young), Robert Lloyd is the real deal. “True” was the beginning of a big time for Lloyd, with four more studio and several live albums coming from his poisonous pen in the last decade, to great popularity and, as usual, commercial disdain. Each of these latter-day releases shows that the old punslinger was still shooting from the mouth, a point that was further confirmed by today’s set.

After taking the stage, bass player Andreas Schmidt lightly introduces the band and that’s when all communication stops immediately, until an hour later Lloyd, in response to the applause of seventy or so, explains his official position ” Thanks for coming out, but it doesn’t matter to clap or shout how long we don’t do encores. However, there was not much to like about the Nightingales at night. Lloyd looked funny, which is not always the case (the 2011 Festival is remembered not only for its spectacular events, but also for Lloyd’s criticism and pride of his audience), while at the Buffalo Bar a few years ago. manic Lloyd wandered through the crowd pulling out a microphone and I suddenly found myself signed up as a backing vocalist for “How to Age”.

Lloyd was content to just roll around the stage tonight, coming on like a drunk puncher from Rocky XVIII with one more punch under his well-built belt, occasionally throwing airy punches at an imaginary opponent, before knocking down a few teams. the last one being performed by King Kong at the top of the Empire State Building, while chasing a fleet of fighter jets. It’s glorious stuff, I remember Lloyd’s slaying when I saw the band for the first time at the Poly of Wales thirty years ago.

Lloyd has not been slow to praise the current group (while what is written on the Facebook page of the Nightingales is not forgiven by some of the commentators who described them as ‘temporary eagles, expensive. sorts and mercenaries’) and will fulfill their big payments tonight. “Mute and Drummer” today Nightingales tub-thumper, is one of several songs that showcases the vocals of former Violet Violet drummer Fliss Kitson and is a popular song, closely followed by the jackhammer versions of “Thick and Thin” and “Bullet for Gove”. Unnamed and unknown music (the request for a list, so far, has not been answered) goes forward, and enters the vitriolic cacophony of rockabilly, post-punk and Glam, (the group broke into “Blockbuster” in the middle. “Taffy Come Home”). The set comes to a high-energy finale with a haunting rendition of “Bit of Rough” from Mind over Matter before the band hits their stride. Lloyd will be performing heavy in Leicester, Manchester, Bradford and Edinburgh before the end of the month. Don’t miss it!

It suddenly surprises me that I didn’t mention Lloyd’s short appearance as Robert Lloyd and the New Four Seasons in 1987/8, when our hero had a modern haircut, signed in big letters and wrote several high-profile records. , the best of which, the brilliant “Something Good,” may be the best pop song you’ve ever heard.
