Evolution and the Rock Star – Michael Jackson’s Death and the Psychology of Hero Worship

Michael Jackson’s death is a reminder of the power of American (and worldwide) celebrity. The breadth of public response around the world begs the question: Why is there so much concern over the death of a man known for his extraordinary behavior and questionable judgment? Evolutionary psychology offers useful ideas.

When evolutionary psychologists believe that a behavior is ubiquitous and widespread in a particular species, they first investigate whether such behavior is “reciprocal,” that is, reproductively beneficial. Hero worship is interesting in this context because we find its forms in all societies. Our first illustrated book, the Epic of Gilgamesh, was mainly concerned with the lives of two heroes. From Odysseus to Elvis, the greats have inspired respect. Why?

Human behavior is understood as a form of genetics. This is one reason why small animals play. When puppies play, they send a very difficult message to their potential competitors and future mates about their genetic makeup. A puppy that is too big or too fast to play communicates with competitors (“you don’t want to mess with me when I grow up”) and future mates (“my genes are very good – you will have good children with me.”).

Therefore, it is understandable that young people enjoy sports (they do) and be good “shows” (they are). In fact, the whole purpose of sport, from an evolutionary point of view, is simply to “show off” our special fitness. As we grow and develop into sexually active adults, we never stop playing. Instead, our drama becomes dangerous (we start calling it “work” or “art”), and most of us become “shows”. We are fine. Our “performance” at work or in social situations is what determines whether or not we can succeed in the birth market.

Although there are many ways to express genetic strength, people seem to be more interested in words, music or sports. Our top politicians, actors, singers and sportsmen are highly respected. Word and music games may have evolved as a type of competitive game meant to demonstrate intelligence. “Playing the dozen” and hip-hop competitions may have originated in human behavior dating back hundreds of thousands of years. As humans evolved into more intelligent creatures, the pressure to choose sex made things work better for them.

Thus, when professional musicians perform in public, they are inserting an ancient evolutionary key into a special lock in our brain. When the key is turned, we receive a pleasant burst of dopamine, the brain’s equivalent of cocaine, a highly addictive drug.

The great thing about a public performance is that it feels good to both the musicians and the audience. Again, from an evolutionary perspective, this is to be expected. The actor’s brain is blessed because evolution has provided a great incentive (dopamine processing) to perform well whenever we can escape. Doing so increases our chances of attracting the partner we want. The display is clear. Showing up in front of a lot of people feels good big.

The audience also finds his brain benefiting from evolution, but for different reasons. Why do we enjoy watching special shows? There are three reasons. First, dramatic performances are “educative”. Humans are the most imitative species on earth. Much of our intelligence is related to our ability to imitate and imitate dynamic behavior. It makes sense for us to be particularly attentive to high performance of any kind – the more we enjoy it, the more we listen, and the more likely we are to learn something. Second, if we feel that we are somehow related socially or emotionally to the player, we are encouraged by the increased likelihood that we or our children will share in the genes represented by the player. Thirdly, when we please ourselves with the singer, such as by showing submissive behavior and worship, the more we have the opportunity to gain the respect of the singer, and in turn, the opportunity to marry the singer and give our children the singer’s superior genes. .

It seems that humans were designed by evolution to turn into rock-stars or bands (or both). The approach we take depends on where we are within the competitive landscape of our brand. If we are the best singers or dancers of our generation, we will be tempted to do it: the rewards, in terms of dopamine in our brains and the interest of our sexual partners, can be great.

Unfortunately, while it makes sense – from an evolutionary perspective – for members of our species to be attracted to professional musicians, it may not make sense from an individual perspective. Many people have learned this the real way, by marrying musicians (I did). My oldest son inherited a special musical talent, so my genes are happy. My genes weren’t involved in my wife’s temper (she’s a mezzo-soprano), that’s just my girlfriend. Evolution promises us dear children; it does not promise us a garden.

Michael Jackson fans have been fooled by evolution. Watching the Gloved One’s magical gyrations and masterful crooning released all the oceans of cerebral dopamine, but that didn’t change the fact that their hero was an amazing human being.

Indeed, Michael Jackson’s life represents the very opposite of wisdom, the opposite of what one should admire or emulate. Dopamine-rushes can be addictive, just like cocaine. Young Michael’s success as a foster child may have ruined his chances of happiness as an adult. He couldn’t succeed in the fun Peter Pan game he discovered as a child, so he spent his life trying to remain a child. This is very unhealthy at age 20 or 30. At age 40 or 50, it is a sign of mental illness.

Evolution has left our brains vulnerable to evolutionary cheat keys. Fortunately, it also gave us an alarm called “why.” We can learn to recognize our ancient evolutionary triggers for what they are – motivations to do things that may or may not be good for us. Nothing can stop the dopamine from kicking in when our fingers start tapping to say “I’m Bad,” but our reason. he can to prevent us from taking the whole thing too seriously. And it should.

We should not underestimate the fun and excitement of participating in the show. Whether we are rejoicing in the stadium or at a jazz concert, our joy is deep and real. We must have this happiness – this is one of the most important things in human life. However, we should look for examples in the people we know and trust around us, not in professional musicians, no matter how gifted they are.
