Guarding Your Spirit and Soul

Proverbs 22:3,5: A wise man sees evil and hides it; but the children will go on and be punished… Thorns and snares are in the way of the crooked; he who keeps his life will be far from them.

These are interesting words from the author of the book of Proverbs. A wise man foresees evil and hides it. He who guards his life will be far from thorns and snares; It is important for us as believers to protect our lives and sanctify ourselves to the Lord. Purify means to separate yourself from the world.

— the living Bible

Proverbs 22:5 A rebel walks in a thorny, deceitful way; A person who values his life will be far away.

It is very important that we realize that in our Christian walk there will be evil, temptations, and “thorns and snares”. We all have weaknesses and it is important for each of us to recognize the stumbling blocks in our lives, and protect our spirit and soul from them. The enemy knows our weaknesses and uses them daily to cause us problems in our lives and stumbling blocks in our paths. If the enemy causes you to lose your testimony, then he, not God, is the one who has the victory in your life!

Matthew 5: In this way let your light shine before men, so that when they see your good works, they will glorify your Father in Heaven.

Everything we do in our lives should honor God. Everything we do, the decision we make, our actions, or what we say must glorify God. We as believers must live a life that honors God in the world, so that others can see God in our lives and want what we have! Who?

If we are always living a “double life” of sin and doubt, then we are not honoring God.

It’s the everyday things in your life that speak to your testimony. It’s not that you talk a lot about God, and what Jesus has done in your life, but how you live! Amen!

Talking and sharing about Jesus is important, but as the old saying goes, “actions speak louder than words.”

So how do we protect ourselves? It’s surprisingly simple but difficult. Surprisingly, God has provided a way through our relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord. In short, in the sense that it is clearly written in the Word of God. Difficult, because it takes dedication, commitment and willingness to give up our pride and authority, and surrender ourselves to God and His will in our lives.

Letting go of control is probably the hardest thing we as believers do. It is human nature to always want to be in control, some more than others, but just like driving a car, only one person can drive one car. In your life, only one person can rule and it must be the Lord Jesus Christ in the person of the Holy Spirit, not you.

When Jesus was teaching his disciples how to pray, he told us a very important lesson to begin with.

— King James

Matthew 6:13: And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one: for thine is the kingdom, and power, and glory for ever. Amen.

Jesus told us not to pray to be led into temptation, but to be delivered from the evil one.

— New King James

Matthew 6:13 And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. for thine is the kingdom and power and glory forever. Amen.

We must make praying for deliverance from the enemy a part of our daily prayers. We must also pray that we will not be led into temptation. Trials and trials are not the same. Trials come into your life, to test your faith. Temptation comes as a stumbling block, to hinder you and release your victory. Know the difference and as Proverbs 22 tells us, foresee the evil and hide from it.

James 1:2-5: My brothers, try to be happy when you fall into all kinds of trials, knowing that the test of your faith is endurance. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be complete and perfect, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and he will give it to him.

When you face a problem, remember that you can ask God for wisdom to endure and He will give it to you. Trust in God’s Word and not your own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5-7: Trust in Jehovah with all your heart, do not lean on your own understanding; honor Him in all your ways, and He will direct your paths.

do not think yourself wise; fear Jehovah, and avoid evil.

This is an important word, don’t be smart about it! The wisdom of the world will always lead you down the wrong path. It’s not what a daytime news anchor or your best friend tells you, but what God’s Word says about your situation. Who?

Staying away from evil is what I want to say. I think I should explain what bad is. Webster’s II New Riverside Dictionary defines evil as morally wrong or bad, evil; to harm, to suffer or to injure.

This can be different for different people. In today’s society so many things are taken for granted that we don’t even think twice about doing something that is clearly described in God’s Word as sin. Looking at most of the television programs shown today, you see show after show about sex, infidelity, murder, rape, theft, and homosexuality. These things make our hearts hard. We accept without flinching drug use, alcoholism, and extramarital sex. We go to movie after movie where God’s name is taken in vain. These are sad comments about us as Christians. We think, “I’m not a bad person, I don’t kill, I don’t curse, I don’t cheat on my spouse, I don’t drink alcohol, or do drugs. I’ve never robbed a bank or stolen anything.” We are so used to sinning in our lives, that we have put it into small and big categories. It’s okay to tell a “white lie”, but don’t rob the bank. It’s okay to think someone is “hot and cute” but not sleep with them. Believe me, sin is sin before God and if we are ready to come before him, put our lives down and change our thoughts, we will fall into the “thorns and snares” that the devil puts in our path.

Jacob 1:13-15: When a person is tempted, he should not say, I am being tempted by God; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt a man; but everyone is tempted when it is his own desires and is entangled in his desires, and when desire ceases, it gives birth to sin, and when sin grows old, it gives birth to death.

The enemy knows your weaknesses and uses them against you. Younger and older.

Do you like to gossip about your boss or work? Do you have a weakness that is affected by drugs or alcohol? Do you drive too fast, not obeying the speed limit? Are you always late for work? Do you always criticize others? All of these things are ways the enemy drags you down and causes you to lose your way. You speed on your way to work, you get a speeding ticket. Then you get angry, get angry and use God’s name in vain. It’s all a downward spiral if not protected and can lead you to destruction.

You sit around at work, listening to others complain about the boss, work and co-workers, before you know it, you are angry at your job, unhappy and complaining all the time.

“Yes, but these are small things,” you say.

SONG OF SOLOMON 2:1 Catch us foxes, little foxes that destroy grapes; for our vine has grapes.

It’s the little things that trip us up, not the big things. You might not go out and rob a bank, but you can’t tell the cashier at the grocery store when he gives you back a lot of change. All are equally bad in God’s eyes.

2 Timothy 3:1-4: But know this, that in the last days there will come times of trouble: for people will be selfish, lovers of money, boastful, proud, rude, disobedient to those who gave birth to them, unthankful, unholy, without love; unforgiving, noisy, unrestrained, cruel, not seeking good, treacherous, hard, proud, lovers of human pleasure, not lovers of God;

This is what is happening among people today, and as a believer you cannot be part of it.

There are a few simple things you can do to protect your life and soul.

— King James

2 TIMOTHY 2:15 Learn to show yourself acceptable to God, a worker without reason to be ashamed, well directed with the word of truth.

Romans 12:1-2: Therefore I ask you, brothers, by the teachings of God, to offer your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, pleasing to God, that is your proper worship.

And don’t be likened to the morals of this world, but be transformed, through the renewal of your heart, so that you can recognize what is the will of God, good, pleasing, and perfect.

We need to spend time in God’s Word, study it, study it, meditate on it, get it into our hearts and minds so that we don’t adopt the ways of the world. And we will be quick to lean on God and his wisdom and not ours. If we do not spend time in God’s Word, we will not know His wisdom. If we do not take time to pray we will not recognize the guidance of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Let me leave you with this Scripture.

1 Thessalonians 5:14-23: And we appeal to you, brothers, warn the disobedient, comfort the timid, encourage the weak, be patient with all. Take care not to return evil for evil, but always strive to do good to yourself and to all.

Rejoice always, pray always; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. do not despise the prophecies. Try all things; hold on to what is good. Avoid all kinds of evil. And may the God of peace alone purify you forever; and may your spirit and your soul and your body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

The first and most important way to save your life is to know Jesus as your Savior.

If you do not know Jesus as your Savior, I ask you to sincerely pray this prayer.

Dear Heavenly Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus. Your word says, “…and him that cometh unto Me I will never cast out.” (John 6:37)

So I know You will not lose me, but You will take me there, And I thank You for that. You said in your Word, “Whoever calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved.” (Romans 10:13) Therefore, in your Word you said:

I am calling on your name, so I know that you have saved me now, You also said, “…that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will do it.” be saved, for with the heart a man believes to receive righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses to receive salvation. (Romans 10:9, 10).

I believe in my heart that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. I believe He was raised from the dead for my justification. And I accept Him now as my Lord, Because Your Word says, “…with the heart a person believes to receive righteousness…” and I believe with my heart, I am now transformed into the righteousness of God in Christ. (2 Cor. 5:21)

And I am saved! Thank You, Lord!

Now I can honestly say, I consider myself a born again child of God!

Glory be to God!!!! Amen.
