Earl Fee Shows How to Go From Good to Great
WARNING: This article will cause some people to defend themselves, to defend themselves, to find excuses while others will find hope. Do it carefully.
Canadian Earl Fee went from being a good athlete in his youth to becoming a great athlete in his later years. By applying what we can learn from his successful transformation we may be able to move from the superficial level to becoming professional athletes or great performers. Before we look at how he did it, we need to take a look at why he is considered a great athlete today.
Earl was a sprinter, probably the best middle distance runner in high school and college – for example, his 400m time was around 51 seconds (not bad at all, but not on the charts either). After retiring for 33 years, the nuclear engineer/supervisor decided to take up running with his two sons, Curtis and Tyler. At the time he was very active as he had been active for many years with tennis, water skiing and snowboarding and a habit of doing 50 push ups every day. At age 56 Earl competed in his first race since college, did well, found it fun and hasn’t looked back since.
In his 24 years of competing in masters running Earl has been very successful, to say the least, in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 300m hurdles, 10Ks, cross country races and more. How successful is it? He has won 12 Canadian age group titles. As of 2009, he has broken 53 (and counting) Masters World Records and still holds 14 of them. Last March, on his 80th birthday, he celebrated with a World Record breaking 1:11.23 in the 400m at the Ontario Masters Athletics Indoor Championships. This time destroyed the 80-84 Canadian Record by 8 seconds and broke the existing World Record by more than 4 seconds; showing his strength, three hours later he returned to the 200m track in 32.07, missing American Mel Larson’s 31.86 World Record and breaking Canadian Aleks Ernesak’s Record by three seconds. A few weeks later, in Raleigh, North Carolina, he set a new World Record in the 400 with a blistering 1:10.64 and returned to Toronto for a new 800 World Record (waiting?) with a scorching 2:48.95. If Earl is slowing down, it’s not by much. If you want to see Earl’s 800m World Record race, go to YouTube and type “Fee breaks World 800m” — it’s worth a look.
For Earl Fee to be able to manage this at the age of 80 means he is doing well. In a speech he gave in November at the Ontario Senior Games he told the audience, “My biggest training secret… age slowly than my enemies.” Let’s see how he did this:
- Earl uses a small anaerobic interval instead of high speed “to slow down aging” and set new records.
- She follows a simple exercise routine and runs and stretches several times a day
- Cross training (rowing, weight lifting, swimming and pool running) is interspersed between games/days
- He uses mental techniques before riding and during competition to maximize results – he sees training as physical knowledge
- He learned the art and science of driving and training by chance and by chance – he kept meticulous logs of his runs/training and referred to them often to see what was working and what wasn’t.
- He eats well – he enjoys a low glycemic diet that has a lot of fish and a little chicken for its protein, fruits, nuts, whole grains, red wine and rich vegetables – he takes 13 nutritional supplements, including vitamins C and E, arginine. and glutamine (amino acid), fish oil, Co-Enzyme Q10
- Earl has been running for a long time as the youngest runner by running intermittently throughout the day.
Earl also believes in the good life. For this reason, he is not only an athlete, but also a family man, an artist, a poet, a speaker and a writer. He is the author of The Complete Running Book: How to Become a Champion From 9 to 90 and has another one in late 2010, called: 100 Years Young The Natural Way – Body Mind Spirit Training.
Although Earl admits that good genes have played a role, he says that “the strength training I’m doing is keeping me young…” Looking back at all of his Canadian and World Record performances in his 60s, 70s and now his 60s 80. , we can say that maybe he knows what he is talking about. If Earl Fee can go from good to great, then maybe we can learn a thing or two from him. So, maybe we can incorporate one or more of his secrets into our lives so that we can go from where we are to greatness, too!
