Essential Oils As Cancer Treatments – Research Updates on Two Important Oils
The search for a cure for Cancer has been going on for years. Scientists all over the world are researching everything they can and the information they can to help people with this incurable disease. In this research there are many herbs and plants that have been very useful throughout the history of medicine. In the past few years, interest and research into the potential of essential oils as anti-cancer agents has grown exponentially. (For these new essential oils, they are simply plant fragrances — for example, the compounds that create the scent of Rose or the scent of fresh Basil. They are complex substances, closely related to the human body, and have many health benefits that are supported by research.)
Two Essential Oils That Have Been Researched for Their Anti-Cancer Work
By selecting available research published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, one finds two essential oils that are often associated with anti-cancer activity: Frankincense and Lemongrass. To be clear, Lemongrass is distilled from the leaves of the Cymbopogon citratus grass; The name Frankincense actually refers to the resin of Olibanum trees found mainly in Ethiopia, Somalia and India – the essential oil is extracted from the resin – or ‘sap’ – of these trees. Lemongrass and Frankincense both have a long history of medicinal use. Lemongrass has been one of the most important medicinal plants throughout human history – Lemongrass is not only abundant, but its power is also important because of its availability.
Modern Research Confirms the Potential of Ancient Medicine
Frankincense essential oil has been recognized by leading medical aromatherapists as a powerful immune system enhancer. A review of Frankincense oil research is amazing, and it lives up to these claims. Searching for the term ‘frankincense oil cancer’ on the National Institutes of Health database yields 34 results (as of this writing). Frankincense oil appears to be able to differentiate between healthy and cancerous cells in an organ or tissue, causing the cancer cells to die and leaving the healthy ones unharmed.
Research is focusing on frankincense’s unique essential oil components: Boswellic acids. These natural ingredients have been well studied for their anti-inflammatory activity, with excellent results. Boswellic acids can be used to reduce pain and inflammation in arthritic joints, and have also been shown to improve the texture and appearance of skin that may be prematurely aging due to sun exposure. It is these same Boswellic acids that have been shown to cause cancer cell death in cancer cells – it is one of those cancers where natural cell death does not occur, and cancer cells then grow continuously throughout the body.
Stabilization of Cancer Cells
The conclusion of a study published in the journal Complementary and Alternative Medicine, March 2009, by researchers at the University of Oklahoma was “funky oil appears to differentiate cancer from normal bladder cells, and suppress cancer cells”. This is a great result, when we consider what modern chemotherapy does – it reduces the power of all the cells that have a tumor, with the hope that healthy cells live in abundance so that the patient recovers. Similar results have been published for many types of cancer: leukemia, leukemia, liver, colon and prostate cancer, and anecdotal reports have also supported its use in the treatment of breast cancer.
Lemongrass: A tropical herb
The first result to investigate ‘lemongrass’ and ‘cancer’ is a paper called “Anticancer activity of an essential oil from Cymbopogon flexuosus” (Cf is the famous type of Lemongrass, although other studies also show similar results from Cymbopogon citratus). This study published in May 2009 ‘Chemico-biological Interactions’, conducted at the Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, analyzed both the in-vitro (specifically “in the test tube”) and in-vivo (in the body) anticancer activity of Lemongrass. essential oils. The oil was tested for its effectiveness against 12 cancer cell lines in-vitro, and 2 in-vivo. The results were nothing short of amazing. Lemongrass was effective in inhibiting the proliferation of all cells, although there was a large variation in the concentration required for this effect. Very small amounts of lemongrass were required to inhibit the growth of colon cancer and neuroblastoma cells in-vitro (a type of neuroblastoma found in children and infants). Using mouse models, lemongrass essential oil was effective in reducing the spread of breast cancer and colon cancer.
Israeli researchers, publishing their results in May 2007 Planta Medica, found similar results looking at the main component of the essential oil of Lemongrass: Citral. This essence adds a ‘lemon’ flavor to many essential oils, including Lemon, Melissa, and Lemon Verbena. Citral has also been known to show signs of cancer (liver cancer cells were examined in this case), causing only the cancer cells to die. It appears that lemongrass essential oil, like Frankincense, also induces natural cell death in cancer cells, sparing normal cells in the process.
These studies (and others available through clinical research databases) are indeed promising — particularly notable in that the low toxicity, availability and diversity of cancer cells of these natural products warrant further investigation. Due to the current state of funding for alternative therapies that are not used today, the government may need to save a lot of money on medical services, or a large grassroots effort, to advance this research until alternative treatments are established. Currently, there are many respected, well-educated health professionals who would be willing to offer advice to those who want to learn more about how Frankincense and/or Lemongrass can be used as preventative measures.
