Teaching Our Children About Community Service

I’m so tired of taking the same toys into my house day after day. Now, I realize my kids are young (5, 3 and 1) but picking up their toys after a day of play is not enough to expect from them. We often make it a family affair to clean out the toy room (aka the bomb-hit-it room). Honestly, how many times can you pick up the same toys without getting sick of them all. You know the Febreeze ad where the lady picks up all the toys and then sprays the carpet? He turns his back on the toy box for just a moment and when he turns back all the toys jump back out and lie on the floor. Yes, that’s how I feel.

So, I decided to give the two older children 15 minutes to clean their toys without help thinking it was enough time to start hard, if not finish, cleaning. I can tell you that for 5 nights straight not one toy was taken. On the sixth night I took out the garbage bag and started to pick it up. My 5 year old asked, “Mommy, what are you doing?” My answer was, “Since you two don’t care about these toys, we’ll give them to someone who wants them.” Thus we started teaching our children about public service.

I’ve picked up more toy bags from Goodwill and Battered Women’s shelters than I can shake a stick at. I realized three things in my battle with my children. 1) He has a lot of things 2) He doesn’t appreciate what he has because he has a lot of things and 3) He hasn’t missed a single time when it’s gone.

Our family now commits to 2 community fundraisers each year. In November we are partnering with Toys for Tots (http://www.ToysforTots.org) and introduce toys that last 6 weeks. My children go with me to the mall where they choose a toy they would like to have and put the money in a box. He would love to have it the first day it arrives at our house and then it is dropped off. So, instead we lovingly give it to someone who will love it. My 5 year old son gets it and is happy to know that he is giving a child a happy Christmas. My three year old has a hard time giving up the toy but we explain why and he lets it go. I know that when they grow up they will have a lot of knowledge.

In the spring, we will work with the local food bank to provide them with food. This is a low time of year for food banks but they still need to serve the same people. Therefore, we are also inviting people from our community, businesses that are associated with the website, my children’s school and family and friends. Buying an extra $20 worth of food when I go grocery shopping can make a big difference at the food bank. This is a challenge that we send to the rest of the community.

Being involved in my community makes me feel good. I want my children to be proud of where they live and serve the community because it helps them every day. The stronger our community, the stronger our children will be. The stronger our children are, the stronger our families will be. Make time as a family to serve your community!!

If new families were given many opportunities to get involved in helping their community I know they would love to do so. There are organizations that need volunteers but there are also things we can do ourselves. Some community service opportunities may not be ideal for toddlers and school children but there are things they can do.

PROVIDED WORK:

1. Foster-Grandparents – Many senior care facilities have a plan for families to come visit the residents. Nothing will put a smile on an adult’s face more than seeing a child. You may not want to do anything more than visit as often as possible. If your child’s grandparents don’t live nearby, this can provide them with a biological grandparent.

2. Help for the Homeless – There are many people who are in need of shelter and food. By allowing our children to participate in serving these people we can teach them compassion and love. Many children live in a “bubble” without realizing that many people are more needy than they are. Soon they will see that they are blessed and through their service they are lightening the burden of others and hopefully brightening their day.

3. Exercise for a reason – I have seen a great increase in our community in walking and running and swimming for various reasons. Most of them are related to cancer but we have had them for hunger, protection of battered women, child abuse and animal protection. Find a cause you believe in, so find supporters and get to it. You’ll feel good about exercising and spending time as a family. (If you have small children, take them in a carrier.) You will feel good because your family is making a difference in people’s lives.

4. Military Package – As a family you can create care packages and write letters to men and women who are serving abroad. You can contact an organization like http://www.operationmilitarypride.org to create and submit your own. Either way getting our kids involved in supporting the military is very important. 5. Christmas boxes – There is an amazing program called Operation Christmas Child (samaritanspurse.org) that collects shoeboxes to send to needy children around the world. Many churches participate in this activity but you can also do it with a business or sports team or even on your own. I let my kids carry each box (with the allowed items) and we had a great time. They wanted to know why we were doing this and where the boxes were going. We looked at the map and discussed how the children of those countries would like the things in the boxes. It was a special time for me and my 5 and 3 year old children.

OUR FAMILY ACTIVITIES:

1. Clean up the Park – When we arrive at each park we go to we put on our latex gloves and take out a small trash bag. We spend the first 15 minutes in the park picking up trash. It’s not much but we use the park so we have to take care of it.

2. Make Phone Calls – I don’t have much TV in my house but if I catch a Tele-thon happening for a cause I believe in I will donate $10 in each of my children’s names. So many people get caught up in the money they feel they have to give to change. You make a difference just by picking up the phone. When my children grow up, I ask them to make the phone calls themselves. They may also want to donate their money.

3. Have Lemons – What child hasn’t asked to have their own lemonade stand? Let your children do one thing but talk about donating some or all of the money to a charity. Make a few signs with the price but include “all money raised will be donated to charity”. They may find that they have a busy place for J’s lemons.

4. Children’s Hospital of St. Jude – I am very happy to have been blessed with three healthy children. There are many people who have faced serious and dangerous diseases with their children. I can’t imagine what those families go through. I often receive a letter from the hospital of St. Jude. Inside the letter are several addresses with my name and address. The letter asks for donations (of any amount) for research that the hospital does. Again, it’s not about the amount but that whatever you can give helps. When you write a check, have your children write a letter or check a picture of the patient. Encourage them to participate in the process and they know that they will probably set up a writing partner to keep in touch with.

5. Support for zoos – Most children love animals and giving them the opportunity to be with the whole group as often as possible is often a dream come true J ​​The animals will appreciate the love and care!! At the shelter, the child can learn about different animals and how to care for them. So volunteering is also teaching our children life skills.

It seems that every day our lives become more and more busy. We must find time to spend with our families. We want to make our community a better place to live and we want to make our family a stronger and more supportive place to live.

I hope my children will always be kind and caring and generous and thoughtful. I want them to know that their own actions make a difference and they should try to make a positive difference. I believe that my responsibility as a parent is to help them develop these qualities. By teaching them about community service, setting an example for them and giving them opportunities to get involved I hope they will learn to be (humbly) proud of their contributions and appreciate their family and their “things”. I just hope it doesn’t stay down!
