America loves heroes. This is the story of a hero who was taught to speak but to act. I love superhero stories, don’t you?

“Give ’em Watts, boys” is where the story begins. I know it’s a strange way to start a story but this is a strange story. What does that mean, give the boys Watts? Originally, the phrase “Give Watts’ boys” was the battle cry of the Continental Army that was used after the Battle of Springfield (New Jersey), on June 23, 1780, in the war for independence.

It became a rallying cry because it represented so many great things about America. He said that we are the people who will fight to the end, with everything we have, for a long time, to gain freedom, to defeat tyranny and oppression.

Give ’em Watts guys it’s really a “graphic story” for 2 men; Isaacs Watts and Reverend James Caldwell (especially James Caldwell).

Isaacs Watts was an interesting man. He grew up in a devout Nonconformist household. His father, who was imprisoned twice for his controversial beliefs, which he aired publicly, was a Nonconformist.

In England, around the end of the 1600s, nonconformists were called Nonconformists because they did not follow the beliefs of the Anglican Church. Watts flourished as a composer and theologian during this time. He wrote hymns and rewrote ancient hymns in the modern language, about 750 of them.

In Ben Franklin’s publishing days it was rumored that Ben had published an anthology of Watt’s hymns, which was very popular among Protestant churches at the time.

“Give it to my Watts boys,” is actually the title of the photo that shows the second character—James Caldwell. Reverend James Caldwell was the pastor of a Presbyterian church, in Elizabeth New Jersey, which provided more than 40 officers to George Washington’s patriot army – The Continental Army.

As history remembers, a fierce battle took place near this small New Jersey church. British soldiers and their German and Hessian allies fought the Continental Army and outnumbered them, about 5 to one. The battle was so fierce that the patriots could blow up paper because of their guns. Wadding was required to hold the gun and musket ball in place and was often made of paper.

Rev. Caldwell heard the cry of brave and devoted patriots. He mounted his horse, and rode hastily to his church-house, where the sitting-room was full of Watts’ music. They collected the sheet music and returned to the war, handing out the sheet music and shouting “Give ’em Watts boys,” referring to Watts’ songs and pages they could tear out of sheet music and use as ammunition for their guns.

I know it’s Christmas time and this is not based on Christmas. The moral of the story is about doing as opposed to just talking, and that idea works every time. Pastor Caldwell did something (he did, he didn’t just complain) in the midst of a fierce battle that could have been lost. He didn’t know if his actions would affect the outcome or not, but he did. Sometimes we have to think about doing it.
