Growing Churches And Why They Grow
This article was written for Bible-believing church leaders. As an old school believer I like to say “we don’t want churches that are good for users; we want churches that kill users.” (Romans 6:6) Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with him, so that the body of sin would be destroyed, so that we would not serve sin. transformation which means the proverbial death of the old man and sinful behavior. Although this is true one cannot give up wisdom in the name of conservatism, purity or old religion. A church without a life-changing message that challenges the status quo and defines right and wrong is a music club. But that’s another story; In this article I want to explore the wisdom of being a user friendly Church and its meaning.
I have been inspired by Paul’s letter to the church in Colossians: Colossians 1:9 Because of this we also, from the day we heard, do not stop praying for you, desiring that you may be filled with the knowledge of God. he will seek in all wisdom and spiritual knowledge; 10 That you walk worthy of the Lord in all pleasing, and bear fruit in all good works. So what is His will? It is clearly not His will for anyone to perish. (Matthew 18:14)
With more than nine years as a full-time preacher I have had the privilege of worshiping with some of the most successful churches and ministries in the country. In recent years I have visited many churches in more than half of the US states just as a visitor; In all of these I have found 4 characteristics of churches that are good to use. I have shared these principles with Churches across the country in more detail than I can here; I hope you will be inspired by these ideas and review the principles of use. Before I share it with you I want to explain what I mean by “easy to use”. A user-friendly church is accessible, open and engaging. Now here are four characteristics.
User-friendly churches are visible. That doesn’t mean you have to be in the best place. What this means is that the community needs to know that you exist and why they can benefit from it.
To make people look good let’s start with your community. Obviously, your site should have little interest. Just a little landscaping, landscaping and parking can make a big difference. Your property style should scream “we know you’re looking and we welcome you to take a closer look.” It would be a shame if hundreds or thousands of vehicles pass by your property every day and only a few see your church because it fits in with the surrounding area. Of course you’ll want to check for installation restrictions that limit what you can do on your site. If the restrictions are tight you can do things like folding and removable signs that can be placed on your tracks at the start of work and removed when work starts to flow lightly and you can get away with a lot.
Here’s a list to get your maintenance crew started:
oClear easy to read signs
oClear easy to detect entry point
o Reception area (do not cover the house)
o Pleasant light
o Attention holders (signs, flags, special event signs, mascots or weather displays)
The second impression is what I call the perfect impression. Detailed forms include the yellow pages, the Internet and newspapers as well as several other methods that should be considered. When I arrive in a new city the first thing I do is find a phone book and look for a UPCI church to go to. After researching many examples it became clear that the first place families go to find a new church when they move is the yellow pages.
Your yellow pages should include the name of your church, a statement about the faith or organization, the pastor’s name, at least two numbers, the address, hours of operation, traffic directions and URL addresses. If you can afford the property, include the services provided, a statement of benefits, a map and a photo of the property or pastor.
The second appearance on your yellow page list is a web page. If your church doesn’t have internet, get it done within the next thirty days. Your church website doesn’t have to be fancy or complicated; a free property management service is better than nothing. The following list contains the minimum information you should provide on your website:
o Statement of faith
oNames of services and service providers
o Directions and or map
oPhoto of the church
o Stories or examples of audio presentations
o Calendar of events
o Contact information (consider other contacts)
The third exposure is newspapers and periodicals. Obviously your church should run an ad to announce special events such as revivals, public seminars and public services that are offered. Consider giving the title of publicist to someone who will manage advertising and get free time, news and media. If your church is offering a charity service as a gift to the needy at Christmas, send a newsletter to the news community. Announce current services, special events, new services, building programs and more.
Other forms of advertising may include billboards, billboards, billboards, T-shirts, radio and television advertisements. Then I want to leave you with a few powerful tips for creating a look.
New Residence Welcome Package
You can learn more about new citizens moving to your city or county. If you share your plans with the building manager they can help you with the distribution. Prepare a welcome package that includes a housewarming gift, coffee or tea, a brochure and a handwritten invitation to the meeting. (I like the idea of having the card signed by hand by each member. This can be done ahead of time.)
Hotel Church Guide
Design and create a beautiful church brochure to display in hotel rooms. The cost of this book can be shared with all the churches you choose. Most of the hotel guests visiting your city go to the church of their choice, yet you are only creating your information through one channel. You can also consider a tourism guide that will only include your church and other businesses; I have seen such articles that only list Christian businesses in the area.
Accessibility starts with your marketing pieces (Books, yellow pages and social media ads etc.) you need to include clear directions with popular landmarks and highways, maps are good. When a visitor finds your property it is important that they know how to get to your parking lot so that the entrance is well known. The last thing you want is for your guest to be disappointed or anxious at the beginning of your visit. It is also a good idea to have reserved parking spaces and signposts. Make sure that the main entrance is clearly marked so that the visitor knows where to go. If you have to use other entrances or travel in bad weather, have signs to guide the visitor. Greeters must be available to greet a guest; make sure they are trained to inform visitors of the location of the sanctuary, restrooms, nursery and Sunday school classes. Travel must be provided; if the guest’s invitation is declined provide the guest with a map of the area that clearly shows the location of the rooms that may be of interest.
Hours of operation must be displayed on signs and at each entrance. Greeters should be trained to meet women with children and the elderly in cars in difficult weather to help them into homes. Paths should be properly lit. Toilets should be clearly marked and if they are hidden under a dark or hidden passage, write on the passage and light it. Attendants should ask the guest where they want to sit (front or back) and ask to be escorted to a seat.
Now this is not something you can prepare and distribute. The friendship of the church must be learned and it must be sincere. Saints should greet the visitor with a smile and a handshake and other non-prayer questions. These personal questions can help you identify what you might be compatible with in order to build close relationships. Young people and children should be taught to go to strangers of their own age; they can invite a guest to accompany them to Sunday school class. I would like to think that someone at our meeting will invite our guest to dinner. I try to call myself time and luck. If it makes you uncomfortable most people won’t agree.
Someone from the administration should go to all the guests to explain how the meeting will be held, when the children will go to their classes and where the classes are. If the whole family is visiting, find out the ages of the children and adults and let them know where they should go for Sunday school classes. Once you know there are generations it may be a good idea for the Sunday school teacher or class representative to greet and invite the guest to join today’s class.
Truly friendly churches recognize the unique needs of their community and strive to meet those needs. If you have a large Spanish speaking population, and the need for a service is Spanish translation or a Spanish service. Other targets include young couples, singles, seniors, college students, military and so on.
