Online Sexual Predators
Instant messaging on the computer has become a phone for children today. Children spend hours online chatting with friends, and sometimes strangers. A recent study showed that one in five children on the Internet reaches out to a babysitter, who tries to initiate a face-to-face meeting.
· Predators have turned to the Internet to find victims. By lurking in chat rooms, and chatting online, internet trolls have the ability to hide their identity. A 35-year-old man may be posing as a 12-year-old girl, or a single mother on the Internet may be a married man.
· Predators tend to produce more. Many people, both adults and children, unknowingly give information about themselves to enemies.
• Monsters form bonds with their victims. Sometimes it takes months. When the time comes for the predator to meet, the unsuspecting and trusting victim agrees to meet, sometimes never to be seen again.
Even a casual conversation can get a child into trouble without knowing it. An online conversation can be like this:
Poohbear105: We won our softball game today!
Dillan955: Thanks! What team do you play for?
Poohbear105: I play for the Jonestown Wildcats.
Dillan955: Cool, my team is the Centerville Sluggers I play 2nd base
Poohbear105: I play 3rd base
Dillan955: We haven’t played yet but it’s getting pretty cold here in northeast PA
Poohbear105: I hate the cold I’m glad I live in FL
Dillan955: I can’t wait for Tuesday with our first game
Poohbear105: Great! I have a game on Tuesday too
Poohbear doesn’t realize but he just tells Dillan the town he lives in and where next Tuesday is. He also told him the team he plays for and his position. It is easy to know the schedule of games. Poohbear might have a guest in his next game.
Most children know more about the Internet than their parents. This information gap leaves parents in the dark about their children’s online activities. As shown in the statistics below, parental control over the Internet is dangerously low:
20 percent of parents do not see how their children use the Internet.
Only 52 percent of parents monitor how their children use the Internet.
• About 62 percent of young people say that their parents do not know anything about what they do on the Internet.
71 percent of parents stop watching how their child uses the Internet when the child reaches the age of 14, not knowing that 72 percent of all children who do not use the Internet are 15 years old or older.
Peer abusers take advantage of the lack of proper supervision of children using the Internet.
Your child may be in contact with cyberbullying if they show any of the following symptoms:
· Downloading guest photos
· Downloading pornographic images
· They hide a lot from the internet and the people they talk to
· Quickly shuts down the computer or changes software programs when someone enters the room
· Receives strange phone calls or gifts or letters in the mail
· He spends too many hours on the computer and his school grades have dropped
· Spends unsupervised time in lounges
· They use online accounts that you don’t recognize or use multiple email addresses
· Go to a website about death, destruction, or other bad news
· Waiting until other family members go to bed or leave the house before accessing the Internet
The key is to monitor your child’s online activity. Make sure you and your child know what to look for on the Web. Remember, because of the anonymity provided by the Internet, the people you meet online may not be who they say they are. Encourage your children not to share personal information on the Internet.
Parents can protect their children by doing the following:
· Know the details of the browser your children use, and limit the type of content (violence, sex, and language) they can see.
· Create a password that allows you to control your computer’s online settings, online resources, and installed programs.
· Do not let your child have multiple email accounts or create accounts without your knowledge. You may insist that your children give you their e-mail addresses and social network passwords. Online accounts and screen names must be in your name.
· Do not allow your children to chat (send Instant Messages) during computer work.
· Ensure that dangerous child traffickers use the anonymity provided by the Web to lure their victims.
· Encourage your children to create usernames and e-mails that do not reveal personal information (name, age, school, etc.).
· Set some Rules for Safe Web Surfers. Review the rules with your child, and post them near your computer.
· Go online with your children to find out who they send Instant Messages to/or chat with. Restrict the use of private social areas and adult rooms.
· If you cannot make yourself an administrator of your computer, then someone else has been designated as an administrator. If the administrator is your child, you can regain control of your computer through your child’s ID and password. When you become a new administrator, you can manage the online content and websites that your child can see.
· Install an operating system that makes you an administrator (for example, Windows XP or Mac OS X).
· Keep a computer in the family room so you can see how they are using the Internet.
· Make sure you know everyone on your friends or acquaintances list.
· Make sure your child knows not to disclose personal information online (such as name, age, photos, gender, physical description, phone number, address, etc.).
· Set rules about where your children are allowed to go and what they are not allowed to go. Follow these rules, and set time limits on computer use.
· Make sure the rules you put in place protect them, not control them.
· Tell your children that you have the right to see how they use the computer and that if you think there is a problem, make sure that they are using the Internet randomly.
