Myth #1 Lettuce is the best food source for your pet iguana

There is some truth in this myth as dark green leaves should be eaten by your iguana, but when you look at the nutritional value of lettuce it is almost non-existent. You want to feed your iguana, food with high nutritional value. Lettuce over time will not do much for your pet’s health.

Myth #2 Iguanas can’t get too big for their cage

Some people have the belief that if they keep iguanas in a small cage or aquarium, then this will somehow stunt their growth. So they find the smallest enclosure possible with the belief that they will have a pocket-sized pet for its entire life. Of course, this is not true. An iguana will grow all its life, at a young age it will grow faster, and as it ages it will grow slower, but still it will grow. If you keep an iguana in a cage or an enclosure that is too small for it, then you invite stress and apathy. Nobody wants an unhealthy iguana, but this is exactly what you will get by creating the appropriate cage or enclosure.

Myth #3 Iguanas should eat gravel

Many people do not think about what kind of substrate is used in the cage. They might think that a gravel substrate is beneficial for their pets to look like or that it could help with their digestion, but this is simply not the case. You don’t want to put anything in an enclosure that your iguana accidentally swallows. Iguanas are constantly sampling their environment by flicking their tongues out. And anything that can be accidentally swallowed, which should not be, can cause serious harm, even death.

Myth #4 Hot rocks are a must for any iguana’s home

You must remember that hot stones are great for heating, and that’s it. Iguanas are cold-blooded, so they need help regulating their body temperature. You want to provide different degrees of temperature in the cage that your iguana can move around to regulate itself. If you use a hot stone your iguana could literally cook itself to death. You must have good lighting in your pet’s house that will allow it to properly regulate its core temperature.

Myth #5 Iguanas must eat insects, pet food, or other animal products

If you look at old iguana books in your library, they advocate feeding your iguana animal protein like crickets and the like. You must remember that an iguanas system is best suited to eat only plant proteins. When you feed your pet protein it affects its digestive system and will ultimately lead to an unhealthy pet, perhaps developing gout or even causing it to develop kidney disease.
