Natural Dog Nose is Super Sensitive – Why Dog Whiff?
When I look at our dog, Eby, his nose in the garden around my house, I sometimes try to imagine what he is smelling. He is like a shopkeeper in a rummage shop, smelling anything and everything that comes his way. And almost every dog I have met knows that the best way to discover and find his favorite things is through his nose.
From the time they are born, dogs have a wonderful sense of smell. Even though newborn puppies can’t see, they can still detect their mother’s smell and warmth and find her easily! Their sense of smell improves as it grows and develops to a point that some say it is up to a million times better than humans.
A dog’s sense of smell is so acute because dogs have at least 25 times more olfactory receptors than humans. His nose can even distinguish between the cheese, meat and ketchup on a cheeseburger. That’s why they are considered man’s best friend, some of whom are trained, work side by side with people to recover survivors from rubble, track drugs, and even mine detection work! There are many sniffer dogs who devote their lives to serious work such as tracking escaped criminals, or missing (or drowned) people for the police force. Dogs are good at identifying bombs, firearms and drugs by smelling traces at international borders and airports. They are loyal crime-fighting partners, doing tough jobs as only our best friends can!
Dogs can detect and distinguish smells in 2 ways, by an air smell left behind by something that has just passed by or a ground smell. Puppies and adult dogs use their sense of smell to communicate with each other. With their noses, they can read messages left behind by other dogs. The way they shake hands or introduce themselves is by smelling each other.
The length of a dog’s snout can have an effect on its ability to smell. Dogs with longer noses have more scent-reception cells. Even a short-nosed dog can smell hundreds of times better than a human.
Nasal nutrition for your dog
Remember that, as a dog ages, it loses some or all of its ability to smell. It can also be a sign of immune problems if a dog’s nose is normally black, but is starting to lose pigment; take him to the vet.
Make sure your dog continues to eat and drink when suffering from any type of nasal problem; Remember that most of a dog’s ability to “taste” food resides in his nose, and if he can’t smell the food, he may not want to eat it. Additionally, even a mild fever will quickly dehydrate a sick animal, and if you can’t get him to drink at home, consider a trip to the vet for fluids. Older animals may need to be tempted to eat, and some seem to find spicy food more palatable. A healthy diet is recommended to improve the general sense of the nose and overall health. The best “nutrition” we can give a dog’s nose is a daily dose of natural scents, produced in nature – the perfect way to build up the supply of sensory cells and brain connections related to smell.
Your dog’s sense of smell is a powerful and useful tool for the animal. Basically, his sniffing and whiffing ways are simply part of his nature
