Kids – Unlocking a Boy’s Imagination With Just the Right Toy

When it comes to boys, any mother knows that the recipe for a fun time includes choosing just the right toy. As the parent of three boys, I can vouch for the fact that boys tend to be naturally energetic, curious, and imaginative. Any toy that can inspire one or more of these qualities in your little one is a good choice.

In our house the boys have a tendency to become interested in a particular theme for a while, and imaginative play is the natural result. Now, they are passionate about trains.

They adore the train of wooden blocks that they drag around the house, re-assembling them time and again; and various other push-toys and battery-operated trains are also favorites. Our middle child is excited to practice his ABCs while assembling his alphabet train puzzle across the living room floor.

When we saw that trains were here to stay for a while, we invested in a train table with wooden trains and lots of trains, bridges, mountains, and other “extras” for Christmas. Two months later, the kids are still as loving as they were on Christmas morning. The older boys, ages 4 ½ and 3, create story lines and act out scenes from their favorite train stories. But even the youngest, at 19 months old, likes to push his train on the track, shouting “Woo woo!”

Trains opened doors to the imagination, and jockeys for favored engines and cars cultivated negotiation and sharing skills. In our house, we recommend trains as some of the best games for boys.

Of course, cars and trucks also go well with boys. For hours of creative play, choose accompanying items such as a garage, a racetrack, or a rolling area rug with roads printed on it.

The average boy will enjoy just about any type of vehicle, whether it’s something as simple as a small hand push car, or something more elaborate like a remote control or ride on car. Other great choices include fire engines, airplanes, boats, buses, and just about anything else with wheels.

More absolute “must have” games for boys include balls of any and all varieties, all types of blocks, and action figures. While children have different interests and temperaments, these choices are proven favorites. But whatever your child’s interests, make sure they have many great game choices to encourage and excite him to play hard and reach his full potential.
