How Power Corrupts in Heart of Darkness, the Crucible, and the Great Gatsby

A classic example can be found in the book of Joseph Conrad Heart of Darkness, which follows Charlie Marlow’s journey through the colonial Congo in search of a rebel ivory dealer named Mr. Kurtz. Although Kurtz was originally a respectable businessman, he has become addicted to what he sees as an evil wasteland full of ignorant people. In fact, it would be misleading to say that power as a destructive force is some kind of static record. Just take, for example, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.

Lovesick because of his ex-lover, Jay Gatz spends years making a lot of money using illegal shoes so he can buy a fancy house, throw wild parties, and get high just to please her. Unlike his wealthy peers, however, his character was not tarnished by his wealth and high status.
