1. The World’s Largest Stone Buddha Image

The Leshan Buddha statue is the world’s tallest stone Buddha statue, carved into a rock by eighth-century monks in southern Szechuan, China. The Buddha image faces the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers and overlooks the sacred Emei mountain.

There is a local saying “The mountain is the Buddha and the Buddha is the mountain.”

This beautiful statue called The Jade Buddha for Universal Peace is 3.5 meters tall and weighs 4.7 tons. The statue is based on the Buddha statue inside the Mahabodhi Stupa in Bodh Gaya, India. in Canada in 2000 and is thought to be the world’s largest source of white jade.

The inspiration for this statue was the Nepalese Lama Zopa Rinpoche. He dreamed of a bright Canadian jade before finding it and persuaded Australian Buddhist Ian Green to carve the giant stone into a Buddha.

The stone traveled from Canada to Bangkok in Thailand and the Thai sculptors took 2 years to complete the statue.

The statue traveled around the world and was exhibited in many countries before being installed in its permanent home at the Mahabodhi Stupa of the Atisha Center in Australia.

This beautiful Buddha image is kept in the Temple of the Golden Buddha, Wat Traimit in Bangkok. The temple dates back to the 1300s, with the Golden Buddha statue at least 900 years old and Sukhothai style.

When the Burmese were about to destroy the city of Ayutthaya the statue was covered with plaster to hide its value from the enemy. 200 years later the origin of the statue was forgotten and it was considered valuable. In 1957 the statue was being moved to another temple and was knocked down while moving. That morning, a monk from the temple had a wonderful dream about the statue and went to see it for himself. Through the crack he saw a yellow glow, and was surprised to find that the Buddha image was made of pure gold. The beautiful Buddha statue is 3 meters tall and weighs 5 tons.

10. The highest Buddhist monastery in the world

Rongbuk Monastery, Tibet China. There are currently 30 Buddhist monks and 30 nuns – however in the past there were about 500 monks living there. It is located at the foot of the Rongbuk Glacier and at an altitude of 5,100 meters (17,000 ft) above sea level making it the highest monastery in the world.
