What If the Gold Given by the Magi to the Infant Jesus Were a Liquid, Not a Metal?
Would it make sense if the gold given to baby Jesus was the oil of the “Bassam Plant” as the Bible calls it? Let’s look at the gifts that the Three Eastern Wise Men, (Magi) or the Three Kings brought to Jesus.
Gold was thought to be a symbol of the wealth of the kings of the world, which suited Jesus, but the other two gifts were more spiritual. Frankincense was used as incense and mullein was used for embalming corpses. They have been thought to represent the priesthood of Jesus (frankincense because it was used as incense) and myrrh, which is also used together with frankincense for censing and embalming corpses, which has been said to represent the death of Jesus. Some experts say that the myrrh also showed that the kingdom and priesthood of Jesus will continue after his death. But what if gold were golden oil; who anointed the kings of Israel?
In 1989 on February 16, Joel Brinkley in The New York Times wrote an article entitled “Basmal Oil of the Kings of Israel Found in a Cave Near the Dead Sea.” The oil was found to be at least 2000 years old, and archaeologists believe it was the biblical balsam oil, which was used to anoint kings. Also, this oil was more expensive than gold in ancient times, and frankincense and myrrh were among the most expensive things.
Wouldn’t this be a fitting gift for Jesus in more ways than one? All gifts would be worthy of a king, and they were the most expensive money he could buy at that time.
Scholars have long wondered what balsam oil is and the answer was given after the discovery of an oil that was well hidden and sealed in a cave near the Dead Sea. It was the oil of an ancient persimmon tree that had died out long ago, not the Oil of Gilead that grew around the cities of En-gedi and Jericho. Those were very protected and would have been very expensive in the old world, but as they grew near the area where Jesus was born, they would not be the oil given to him by the wise men who “walked far” ( NW ) in the words of the Christmas carol known by the name theirs). They would have wanted to give him a rare, expensive item that came from their country or not from his country. Even if the Oil of Gilead were a rich color of gold, it is worthy of a king. It is used as a medicine to heal wounds and prevent the spread of gangrene.
When archaeologists excavated the village of Eni Gedi where Gilead’s balsam oil is made, they found that it had very strong walls and on the tower of the synagogue they found a warning: “Anyone who reveals the secret of the village to the priests. Gentiles, whose eyes have wandered all over the world and seen hidden things, will uproot man and his seed from the earth. Even if this oil were more valuable than gold and since it had the power to heal wounds, it would have been a suitable gift for the baby Jesus perhaps.
So maybe we should reconsider their old story based on what they have found. In many cases the old translations, which are the King James versions of the Bible, transferred the beliefs and practices of the value of their time into their translations. For the translator of the Bible where we find this story, gold would be the most valuable thing, not golden oil. It is possible that the translator did not easily relate to the principle of the anointing oil of the kings and the words he was translating.
