"Padding It Out" – Over Writing in Fiction
Have you ever picked up a book, read it and realized it wasn’t too short, too long, full of little animals? I have done it often and no doubt will do it again. I have read several short stories that were published and published as novellas or whole books. Maybe I have what Hemingway called “a light built into the shit” because I can sense this instinctively. It has become a habit that annoys me.
I recently read, on Kindle, a crime novel. Although it was well written, it was full of unnecessary pictures, subplots, dinner table conversations, descriptions and comments on the dishes served. A good, gentler editor would have cut this overload and reduced it to the short story it was.
Is this inflation a coincidence or an accident? I would say both, but often by accident. I believe that many writers get carried away with their own intelligence and feel like they are just that to be to put all these things in; they How do I like readers? I feel in myself, I write descriptive things that make sense, but they don’t advance the story or even close things. It’s the content editor’s job to bring us back to earth. But what if we like it up there and don’t want to go down? In this age of digital self-publishing it’s a problem, isn’t it? We just go ahead and publish.
Many authors of this generation of Kindle, reject the editors seeing them as intruders who want to destroy the purity of their ideas and the way of expression. Why would you pay someone to cut your work and turn your story into theirs? And today such authors are free to reject all restrictions of the editor, and publish. A publishing house can control this nonsense and hire their own in-house editors.
On the other hand, I’ve heard of editors urging writers to “enhance” their work in terms of structure: “It’s good, but it’s a little thin. You can’t fill it up a bit. Add pictures, more. characters.” It’s wrong I believe.
One of Elmore Leonard’s 10 Tips for Writers is: “Always leave out the parts that people tend to skip and not read. ” The best advice I have received.
It is important for writers to realize who they are and what they can do. And a writer who knows his weaknesses has a powerful asset. Few writers would take seriously a War and Peace. It took skill to make it David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities and A Christmas Carol; but, like Tolstoy, Dickens he was wise. Such writers are thin on the ground.
Apart from good writing and storytelling skills, a fiction writer must have a good imagination. They should weigh the concept of the story to see its value. What would make a terrific short story could be a poor book that needs padding to make it rich. But it won’t boxing its weight.
My latest short story got a bit of attention when I published it on a Thai website. I received emails suggesting that I turn in a book. I thought a lot about it. Me he can do it, but it’s not the same story anymore and I rejected the idea. It’s a short story and that’s about it.
Some writers are written for short stories. Jack London, my all-time favorite, was one. Jack was a great writer, but he never wrote a great book. However, he he said write a great novella: Call of the Wild, a record success that has not been changed and has been recorded many times. However, it is his short stories, tales of the Yukon Gold Rush and the Isles of the South Pacific, for which he will be remembered. In summary: Lighting the Fire has been voted the best short story of all time. But try to find his books.
The Kindle led, indie revolution that ended the injustice of the old publishing house rule has no stronger supporter than me. But has the pendulum swung too far? For they also have their evils; it is completely unethical. Now anyone can publish anything. And they do.
Meet Priscilla Anne Case, 22, working the Costco line in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He hasn’t written anything above email, but he’s about to write a romantic, magical, full of vampires and neo-Nazi white supremacists, in the form of a two thousand word, bodice ripping, trilogy. They can even publish each book as four sets of boxes. Go girl, nothing can stop you.
An old saying goes that if you take 100,000 chimpanzees, give each of them an easel, a canvas and a palette, within a year you will find a Rembrandt. In the indie world it seems we are waiting for our own Rembrandts. But wait. Maybe they are there; beautiful, wonderfully written books of all kinds, just waiting to be discovered, hidden beneath the sad sea of bloated mediocrity that is the Amazon mud heap.
