The Exodus – Go Down, Moses
“Come down, Moses,
Far away in the land of Egypt;
Tell the old Pharaoh
Letting my people go.
Jews are God’s chosen people, according to the Bible. The Holy Book tells about their evolution as a society and a nation, facing sad challenges and divine rewards. Their existence is governed by their obedience to God and always has a great change in different situations. Exodus is a story that confirms the special care that Jehovah gave to these people.
With the migration of Isaac’s family to Egypt, where one of his sons, Joseph, held a very high position, the Jews were established for a long time in the land of the Pharaohs. If at first they had a good position in the area, then they were turned into slaves. Their number was so great that the Egyptians feared that there would be an uproar and established a law that Jewish male children were killed at birth. A woman hid her son in a waterproof basket and floated him down the Nile, where the princess found him.
The boy’s name is Moses and he grew up in a royal family. When he grew up, Moses killed the captain who was torturing the other slaves and sent them into exile. When he reached the age of 80, God spoke to him through a burning bush and sent him to return to Egypt to save his people, who were still slaves. In order to reassure Moses, God assured him that he would be on his side and help him complete his mission. After returning to Egypt, Moses asked the current Pharaoh to free the Jews, when the ruler scoffed. Then Moses began to perform miracles.
Some biblical scholars hesitate to say that Moses’ actions were miraculous because they can happen like natural disasters, but others argue that, since they were done by man with God’s help, they are indeed miraculous events. Moreover, they accepted this confirmation with the fact that their timing, appearance and strength were unpredictable.
The unbelievers scorned Moses’ miracles by saying that they might have been embellished by superstitions, unwarranted natural disasters or natural phenomena unknown to humans.
The following article will describe and analyze in detail the ten plagues that Moses brought to Egypt to determine whether they were miracles or not.
