The Reward of Meekness
The Bible says that the meek will inherit the earth (Psalm 37:11 and Matthew 5:5). Meekness was the magic wand that made Moses successful in his chosen work. If you want to succeed, you must be gentle and if you don’t want to, pray. Have you ever thought about why God chose Joseph to be the caretaker on earth of our Lord Jesus Christ?
On 28 September 1996, I was serving together with Evangelist Gboyega Ajadi at Iree Polytechnic Gospel Student Fellowship and the Lord ministered to me and asked me this question, “did you wonder why I thought it was appropriate to use Joseph to take care of the church?” the first years of Jesus Christ on earth?
The Lord revealed many qualities found in Joseph that qualified him for this special position, and I share some of them with you by writing this. (Matthew 1:18-25)
18 And the birth of Jesus Christ was like this, when his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they met together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
Joseph suddenly realized that although he did not know Mary, she was pregnant. This means that he did not have an intimate relationship with Mary that would lead to sex. He did not know what happened, we know today because we have read it, and we have learned about the life of Christ; But at that time, Joseph did not know what we know today. He did not know that the child in Mary’s womb was of the Holy Spirit. How many men today can put up with that?
19. And Yosef her husband being a righteous man (the Bible says that Yosef was a righteous man, he was meek and gentle, and rational) and he did not want to show her an example in public, he decided to leave her. privately.
Some men today would be so angry that they could cut off his head, but when Joseph was thinking about this, an angel appeared to him in a dream to warn him. He didn’t need confirmation, he just believed, he didn’t despise the dream, he didn’t want to hear a voice or see an angel in real life like Manoah, Samson’s father. He just believed in God – it was a simple faith. He did not quote the scriptures that say, “by two or three witnesses every word will be confirmed” He just believed and obeyed the word or voice of God which happened to be the perfect will of God.
How many people today are being led (through dreams) but they reject the dreams as just a figment of their imagination. Joseph was obedient to God, it didn’t matter whether God spoke through a dream, a voice, an inner prophecy of a small voice, a visit from an Angel, or whatever, he just obeyed. He obeyed the angel that God sent him in the dream – this is gentleness. It is not surprising that God chose to use him to raise and nurture our Lord Jesus Christ in the flesh.
Joseph did God, being the father of the Son of God, he was good enough to teach Jesus some important things of life (humanity). When they went to Jerusalem when Jesus was twelve years old, Jesus went to the temple, ‘to do my Father’s work’. They searched for him in grief for three days. When he was found, Joseph did not raise his hand to beat Jesus or whip him, many men today would be so angry that the first thing they would do would be to beat that child. It was Mary who spoke and said,
“Son, why did you do this to us? Look, your father and I were looking for you with sadness”. It is not written that Joseph was angry (or angry), he did not act beyond the limit, he was a man full of wisdom and understanding. Wisdom is believing in God even if you don’t understand what he is doing, saying or planning. In Luke 2:50, the Bible says:
And they did not recognize the Word (of Jesus) that he spoke.
Joseph could not understand but he believed in God, yet he did not abuse Jesus, he loved Jesus for what he was – what a father, like God Almighty. In the same way we are not called to understand anything about God or His Word, we are called to believe Him and His word and that is true wisdom. In Matthew 1:25, we read
And he did not know her until she gave birth to her first son; and called his name Jesus.
Joseph was punished enough not to have sex with Mary, they lived together, they slept together in the same house, but he did not do that. Everyone knows that it is good to sleep with your pregnant wife but Joseph did not. What kind of reward do you think Joseph will receive? Think about the father of Jesus who had the responsibility to take care of Jehovah, he lived a good example, he did not continue to get drunk, sleep with girls, lie, cheat and so on. I mean Jesus Christ) could learn from him to be a good carpenter, he taught ‘God’ many things about the body. He protected our Lord Jesus Christ, he took him to Egypt when Herod wanted the life of the Savior. Meekness is a word that explained everything about Joseph’s life. If you can show yourself to be a gentle person, heaven and earth will see and recognize you and reward you with great success in all your endeavors. If you study your Bible carefully, you will realize that Joseph was a very skilled carpenter. When the story of Jesus spread, people were surprised as it is written in Matthew 13:55
“Isn’t this the son of the LAW?…”
Joseph was the carpenter of his city, which means that he was the most successful, the most famous, the most successful carpenter. Joseph because of his meekness won a lot, people followed Jesus to him, why? This is because Joseph acted wisely, and people did not see him.
Some people today are doing so well that no one can remember or recognize their father, because they don’t have a good father. Jesus’ father was a successful father because of meekness, be meek. A gentle person is too calm to fight, he doesn’t know how to argue, he is so busy with his goal that nothing else matters. So because of this ‘weakness’, God himself must fight all his battles. A meek man cannot fight: God fights for him. If you can fight and take revenge on your enemies, God didn’t have to fight for you. Moses did not fight anyone who attacked him, God fought him. Even when his sister Miriam insulted him, God taught him a lesson for seven days not to trouble a meek person. When you see a gentle person, be afraid because God himself is the one who fights for him. So, why not pray for the spirit of meekness now?
