Exploring Memory, Creating Myth, Providing Sustenance – Holly Prado Takes Us "From One to the Next"
Holly Prado’s latest book of poetry published by Cahuenga Press, from one to another it takes us on a journey from the daily changes and transformations of mother’s broken dreams and memories and ultimately helps us to become safe, but hopeful tales. The book consists of three parts that are very different in style but related in order to convey its meaning. The first part is the title of the book. from one to another and uses the phases of the moon to light our way. It starts with a full moon in Taurus / Scorpio that happens in autumn, the year ends and I am reminded, as an artist in Los Angeles, how one begins to complain at the end of the year when production slows down and the city goes to sleep, no work, no expectations until January (in time This economy, now, really worries more than the group to make). Prado agrees with this The next day Santa Anas. This piece talks about the difficult times in Los Angeles’ Santa Ana climate:
if we want to be free
we wouldn’t be here
cracked skin especially on my big toes
and small wounds
The piece slows down even as Prado shows small consolations and thus manages to comfort her husband:
new sweaters
two of them
it’s good —
I got the money
as I always do.
anger passes
“don’t worry don’t worry”
I tell him
earlier than usual at night
These poems are quiet and fluid and acknowledge that being, being established, being human in this world. Visions But Reality to explain this better:
the moon above my head this Sunday morning
good looks but
amazing as I have never seen it before
if this is the first month
A quiet look at life’s transitions creates deep memories branch the second part of the book. When I read it branch, I felt a great sadness that came from remembering pages, like real pages. The poem comes to a family level in memory of a woman whose branch was recently cut off. One of the most interesting things for me Skirttwo simple words, one stanza:
green
wing
I’ll stand up for myself, I think it can be criticized as being too visual and too vague for any understanding, but within this section it acts as a bridge. It is a woman’s skirt and that skirt is a reminder of spring and wind and at its beginning, life. That skirt turns into a skirt with gold coins on the hem and the life of a gypsy girl who eventually learns to stop looking for meaning in loss and turn to meaning in what is left. This section ends with Tonight:
give me the way down
but then
I look at one branch
it grows many branches
that’s a lot
I found the episode to be incredibly paced and the pace is fast, moving from scene to scene, like a dream. These scenes begin to plant the seeds of the story that will be fulfilled in the final episode.
In celery, the third part of Prado’s book, narrative poems explain our need for myth and the divine interpretation of everyday life, although with his pragmatic music, Prado, himself, can reject the latter. The title is taken from the appearance on the last day of Chinese New Year of an old woman offering celery to the revelers. Prado provides an explanation in the piece Sweater:
To return to our human thoughts, the story says that on the fifteenth day of the Chinese New Year, it is time for the old woman to greet us with celery, a basket full, to remove the sugar of happiness, to make us happy. in our leafy feet – Reminds us that….we are on a planet that cares and respects its creatures –
Prado’s descriptive work in this section also confirms this memorial as it is Basketball:
One of us fails, others jump – art, advice, prayer, cooking – to relieve the pain, to restore, to make another beginning. The power of physical salvation has nothing to do with comfort. It drives us: genetic inheritance, genetic belief. Its speed is the realization that death is behind us – fast.
The piece goes on to talk about the speed of nature but there is a slow, sweet quality to all the narrative poetry. It is as if Prado is weaving a text using long-lapse photography. This lapse of time allows us to see a glimpse of the living space among the memories that have just happened of the year as it was. Sunflower:
…the charm of meat and greens and chilled wine…a food that invigorates our bodies to the golden bars of squash, a wintery look best made with long, slow cooking.
But it is not only physical food. These parts, like the contents from one to another and branch they are looking for a thread, a line that connects our individual stories and collective consciousness. In the last section, Weather Prado addresses this issue directly and effectively. He records what he has collected and writes during the year and then:
These little mirrors are important because they are the symbols that my myth creates for itself, the myth of the connection with the celery woman, or the truth of any culture. …invisibly, it enhances our life form. Everyone adds to this. Everyone who speaks, writes and wonders.
With this, Prado embraces his readers and brings them into his gypsy camp to tell their stories and warm their hands. Through the use of different styles in this book, Prado is a master of storytelling but you always feel that we all have a place. from one to another they not only prove the importance of language and style but also of the narrators themselves.
