Give Me That Old Time Religion: Raising Christian Children Part 6

Teach your children about God

As I begin this final article in a 6-part series, I am reminded of a song recorded by George Strait. The song is “I Saw God Today”. It brought us some fun memories for our three children’s birthdays. When each of our children came to this world, I truly believed that I was in the presence of God. There is no feeling like the first look at your new baby.

As soon as this miracle happened, our parents began to realize the responsibility we have. We as parents now have a responsibility not only to our children, but also to our God to raise our child the way God wants us to. Our main goal now is to teach our children about God.

The younger generation has never needed greater knowledge about God and His laws than in today’s society. Morale drops all the time. God is being pushed out of our schools and out of our government. What kind of world will our children face when they grow up? We wanted our children to be strong in faith. We knew that the best way to do this was to teach our children about God.

As new parents we had to make a plan. A plan we knew we could follow consistently and consistently. A plan that would make us always aware that our words and actions were examples for our child to follow. We realized that we were not supposed to follow our plan, but to follow God’s plan. Teaching our children about God can only be achieved by following God’s plan.

Two questions had to be answered to prepare us to teach our children about God:

1. What is our purpose in life?

2. Why did God create us?

When we look around us we see many examples of non-human beings and we know exactly what their purpose is. For example, what is God’s purpose for animals? The Bible tells us that every creature that God created has a purpose: horses, cows, sheep, chickens, fish, dogs, cats, etc. to give food to the people, or to make them happy and to be with them; everyone has a purpose for being here.

So what is the purpose of man? Why did God create man? Again, we turn to the Bible for the answer. Genesis 1:26, 27: “And God said, Let us make man in our image, according to our nature; upon all the earth, and upon every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” So God created man in his hand [own] in the image of God he created him; He created them male and female.

We were created by God to be like him. 1 Jn. 1:1, 2: “Behold, the love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; children of God, and it is not seen what we will be; but we know that, when he appears, we will be like him;

Man was given the best things and power by God for a purpose: to control, follow, and use those things to develop God-like behavior. The habit of making good choices to bring happiness into our lives. As parents, we must from the beginning of our children’s lives teach them to develop God-like behavior. How fast? Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

We started the first day reading the scriptures in front of our newborn son. Did they understand what we were reading? Of course not, but the point is that we were establishing a habit that would continue in our child’s life in our home.

When our children grew up and reached the age where they started to understand and ask questions, we were not asked why we read the Bible every day. It was understood that part of the family’s daily routine was reading the scriptures. As our children developed reading skills, we encouraged them to be involved in reading the scriptures every day. Discussion always followed the reading of the scriptures. We didn’t want our children to feel like they were being given a daily lecture so we included participation in the discussions. We encouraged them to ask questions. We also asked them questions to get a chance to express their beliefs.

One of our favorite answers to the questions our children are asked as they grow into school and into their teenage years is, “What does the Bible say about this?” It is amazing that the Bible can answer any question about life and our purpose on earth. There were many times when our children asked a question that we needed to “put on the table to investigate” which means we should ask our minister.

As parents, we believed that reading the Bible every day and talking with our children helped our children overcome many trials that the children may face. We were blessed that our children knew they could ask us any question about any subject without fear.

We taught our children to pray.

Before each meal we had a prayer of thanksgiving for our blessings. When our children were old enough, we would take turns praying at mealtimes. When our children were little, we prayed with them before bed. As they grew older, we watched them pray and then we left them to pray on their own. We wanted our children to pray in the same way as talking to a friend. We wanted them to understand that God was truly their friend.

Now that our children are growing up and raising Christian children themselves, we are very grateful for the time we spent teaching our children about God.

Many years ago I came across this short passage. I wish I knew the author, but I don’t. We printed it out and put it in a frame on my desk. It is simply called: What Is A Child?

What is a Child?

More than anything else, a child is a bundle of potential.

But this skill must be developed, nurtured, and guided.

Unfortunately, many parents are not educated

how to teach their children with the right environment.

How can you plan to give your child money?

the best foundation for a good life?

Hopefully, this series of articles will encourage you to know how you as a parent can be sure that you are giving your child the best foundation for a successful life. Teach your children about God.

Thank you, and God bless you and your family!
