An Introduction to the Abstract Artistic Movement

Mark Rothko began in the mid-1920s in New York in a group of artists that included Adolph Gottlieb, Barnett Newman, Joseph Solman and John Graham and Milton Avery who served as their epicenter. He compared art to things that old people and small children draw. He took inspiration from the stories and books of Friedrich Nietzsche, especially The Birth of Tragedy. Rothko was quoted as saying: “I’m not an abstract artist. I don’t want a connection between form and color. The only thing I care about is expressing human emotions: tragedy, happiness, destiny.” He committed suicide at the age of 65 by using drugs.

Franz Kline shared a similar approach to photography as Jackson Pollack. The most well-received works were black and white. His results included Japanese calligraphy, railways and other automotive design elements. He was a close friend of Willem De Kooning, who suggested that he work on a project that Kline immediately liked.

Willem De Kooning was also an “action” artist. He made several abstract paintings early in his career. In his later work he turned to enamels which Pollack loved out of scarcity because traditional paints were too expensive to afford. He continued to use statistics and entered the maturity of his career. His late works, in the 1980s, have never been exhibited but are said to have shown great promise in predicting the future of art even as de Kooning himself entered Alzheimer’s disease.
