Raising Money and Everest Treks
We often hear about the success of mountain climbers who climb the highest mountain in the world, and return to a select group who reached the top of the world. But we don’t often hear about the good work that drives people to Everest Base Camp, especially if they don’t want to make money on the summit.
Northallerton Dummies
It is not uncommon for people to go to great lengths to raise funds for an Everest expedition, knowing that there is something special about reaching the Himalayas. In August 2009, sixteen students and three teachers from Northallerton College in Yorkshire have been doing something original to raise money for their Everest Base Camp trip at the end of the year.
With all the activities and events of the Everest expedition ahead of them, the students want to earn money for the expedition in silence. A department store in their town has hired them to look at the screens instead of the mannequins. The exhibition coincides with Yorkshire Day on the 1st of August, so students can expect to attract the attention, and hopefully the donations, of many locals who pass by.
Fourteen years
Northallerton students aren’t the only youngsters in the news for fundraising right now. In July 2009, a younger and fresh-faced Matt Moniz plans to climb fourteen of Colorado’s highest mountains in two weeks to raise money and awareness for paraplegia. He has called the trip “14 in 14”, because every peak he is climbing is over 14,000 feet. What makes this journey even more daring is that Matt is only eleven years old.
In preparation for this, he was trained to climb at Everest Base Camp. He and his father, Mike, took a change that also included the near Kala Pattar (5545m) where they had a good view overlooking the Everest Base Camp. The idea of Matt’s climb is to reach a high place where he can experience the shortness of breath that his best friend, who suffers from Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, has to endure every day.
Arriving at Everest Base Camp at 5,360 meters (17,600 ft) Matt has already climbed higher than the ’14ers’ ahead of him, but the Everest journey is a slower climb than the one ahead of him. Although several Colorado mountain climbers are climbing the mountains using simple routes, doing it once every day for two weeks is an exhausting prospect.
If he completes all fourteen peaks he wants in two days, he will have climbed nearly a quarter of Everest and more than doubled the vertical distance from sea to Everest Base Camp. Matt and his team, which includes the family of his sick friend, have already raised $14,000 for charity, and climbing.
Chocolate Sherpa
For 30 days earlier this year, Belgian explorer Louis-Philippe Loncke led a small group on a 400km trek from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp. Known as the ‘Crazy Belgian’ from his previous crazy adventures, Louis Philippe wanted to raise money to set up a much-needed hospital in Nepal. Apart from the long distance, the unusual thing about this Everest expedition was that it included distributing 100 kilograms of Belgian chocolate on the way to the Sherpa people and having a delicious portion of high quality chocolate when they reached Everest Base Camp.
The group called themselves the Chocolate Sherpas and used their unusual work, not only to raise money, but also to give something to the Sherpas and porters who have helped support many Everest expeditions over the years. Their expedition successfully arrived at Everest Base Camp on May 1 and, for the many climbers and backpackers who were waiting there to sell their products at their meetings, their arrival was a sweet and welcome departure from their usual routine.
