HaLong Bay Spectacular – 2,000 Islands Ahoy!

No plasma screen can match, Pham Hoang Van, a lecturer at Hanoi Open University, exclaims, standing on board Indochina Sails, moving his camera around, unable to decide what to focus on.

The artist has been traveling everywhere; until he sails Ha Long Bay, part of the World Heritage, does he realize all the beauty of his country.

In the middle of the sea, red-brown sails appeared. Thousands of mountains, silent and like in a silent movie, pass by. To the east, the Bai Chay Bridge makes itself a single white hair hanging over Cua Luc; the fibers form a soft fiber. Completed in late 2006, it is one of the world’s five largest single-span, fixed-span bridges. To the west are the slopes of Tuan Chau Beach. Under the golden sun, balloons float in the air giving passengers a bird’s eye view of Ha Long Bay. After turning into a tourist resort five years ago, the two-kilometer beach is the place for water sports: jet-skiing, water-skiing, parasailing, boating, climbing and camping.

A bird hovers over the mountains, its wings spread out and motionless, like an airplane.

Nestled within four star islands, Ha Long Bay is a garden. For about 300 million years now, stone mushrooms have been growing there, resisting all the destruction of storms and salt water; the waves have wiped their feet smooth.

The mountains, the legend goes, are jewels that are spewed by magical dragons to help the Vietnamese people stop the advance of enemy boats. Today, after 4,000 years of the country’s history, the jewels still exist, but only to attract millions of tourists. According to statistics released by the Quang Ninh Trade and Tourism Department, in the first six months of this year, the province has received more than 2 million tourists, twice the number of local people. Obviously, Ha Long Bay, which is twice recognized by UNESCO as a World’s Heritage, is the main attraction.

One thousand nine hundred and sixty-nine islands reflect life in 1969 in different ways. In the great calm of the sea, the rooster and the hen on Trong Mai Island still shake each other; double lip is still working. The head of a man on Dau Nguoi Island looking towards Ha Long City, like an exile missing his father’s land. The dragon is moving around like Rong Island. And from Canh Buon Island the cruise ship is sailing.

There were rumors that the destruction of coal mines, the destruction of mangrove forests for marine life, tourism and domestic pollution would strip Ha Long of its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, but this did not happen.

Ha Long offers a free zone for condoms, cigarettes and candy sticks. If someone tells the board management that every passenger on our trip is disgusted, we will be fired, said Truong, a chef at Indochina Sails. “The advantages of working in the yard are free travel and good air. No cars, no dust”, the 23-year-old man adds, smiling.

Indochina Sails drag anchor on the bottom of the sea. The forests on the mountainside are moving too. Some get closer while others get smaller.

The fishing village of Cua Van is around 200 green spaces hidden in the windless wind. On the floating platforms, the baby has crawled to the edge of the water; two youths are bending down, taking out worms from the net, preparing for the next part of the fishing for the night; men are preparing the bamboo for the trap of the animal. An old woman is grazing on the sea… These people are human characteristics, in addition to the image of the sky, mountains, and water of Ha Long Bay. They are the descendants and continuation of the ancient Vietnamese Ha Long Culture, dating back more than 4,500 years.

The two floating schools are a great change brought to the rural people who for thousands of generations have been illiterate.

Inside the cultural scene, young people are playing cards, laughing loudly. Recruited to work in tourism, he loses the dark skin of his fellow fishermen. Completed in 2006 to promote tourism, the fishing center offers nothing but artisanal products made on land.

Around the floating village, mountains grow. Looking up at the sky, the towering peaks look like huge waves rushing from the horizon. At the foot of the mountains, small children of needles, tails sprouting, mouths wide and pointed, walk happily, shaking the surface.

In trouble, something is going on. A villager wearing a colorful hat appears on a small wooden boat, smiling. Ivory teeth grow between the dark, wrinkled cheeks of the fisherwoman.

Stone steps lead to the wonder of La Grotte des Surprises. From the ceiling, stalactites descend, abundant and beautiful. Below, stalagmites grow, fearless and glittering. Before he created the world, maybe God had made a model here, in this cave. From the rounded base, a long piece of stone sprouts. The tour guide asks the guests, “Does it look like an index finger?” Then he turns his eyes to the person next to him, and whispers, “I’m sorry, but people say it looks like a penis”. At one temple, a mother cradling her child told the story of Napoleon. The turtle rears its head; a lion sits at the base of a stone. As if to match the rock life world, the thousands of bats clinging to the roof are also motionless.

When guests return from Soy Sim Beach, the buffet on board is ready. On the grill, chicken wings, pork ribs, beef are dripping with fat, sending the smell of oil, and the sound of withering. Oysters are opening their shells, revealing white, sweet meat; pieces of corn and tomato are turning brown, attractive.

Light collects the remnants of light. In a moment, the beach becomes an amazing forest with many stone creatures that can be seen from about 2,000 rocky islands.

Then the first stars appeared, through the stillness of the evening sky, twinkling like the torches of a million diamonds. From the sea, the wind comes, blowing the clouds to the land.

The traditional music section is the last option for dinner on the ship. Tourists go to bed, comforted by the sea breeze and crashing waves.

Nature has regained its power. The stars shine; clouds hover above the masts like thousands of giant jellyfish. Some shooting stars race from west to east, falling behind the mountains.

Even the mountains lie on the sea. Due to the end of the night there, some fishing boats pass by. Their engines hum for a moment before falling into silence. Their yellow lights flash like fireflies on the ground.

Also, at the mouth of the sea, the whale fishing boats shine. The animal, attracted by the light, gathers around the nimbuse, to be caught in the electric net. If squid from Nha Trang Bay are loved for their large size, those from Ha Long Bay are loved for their taste.

There is a long cry as if one monkey on Monkey Island is calling to another.

The wind is strong.

From the edge of the dark mountains, a small piece of gold emerges, shining. And the clouds are like a great herd of animals that are sliding down with the moon of the last quarter. One minute he’s a bear without a tail, the next he’s a five-legged dog.

Sitting around the ruins, the mountains are still silent, sacred as if they were souls that remain from the Neolithic Ha Long Culture 50 years ago.
