The Libertine’s Up The Bracket Album Review

The Libertines’ debut album Up The Bracket is one to remember. Fronted by Pete Doherty, Carl Barat, Gary Powell and John Hassall, the London quartet prove to be a band to watch in the future with their fusion of punk and rock. Produced by Mick Jones of The Clash fame, Up The Bracket has reintroduced the youth to a new concept of rock music.

The 90s were a tough time for guitar music as pop music became more popular in the charts and on the shelves. Even in the late 90s British music was in a bit of a slump; influenced by the Brit-pop era of Oasis and Blur. However, as the sun set in the 20th century, the beginnings of modern rock were established. In front of The Strokes and The Libertines, a new generation of music was introduced to publishers, to critics, and most importantly to music lovers.

The Libertines’ original goal as a band was to be signed to a major label. When they formed in 2000, they began to gather a following; playing impromptu games in members’ homes. This not only created a strong foundation of friendship with their fans but also helped to establish their image. The image soon gained momentum as Doherty used the internet as another way to connect with her fans. This practice showed two things. The influence that Doherty can have on people through the message boxes, and that he can always connect with someone. After the release of Up The Bracket, The Libertines’ following grew exponentially as their recently scheduled gigs quickly sold out. Mick Jones realized that he had started a revolution, as he had done with The Clash.

Although there are two main influences on Up The Bracket of Carl Barat and Pete Doherty, the ex-father of The Clash is prominently featured on one track. Horror Show is a great song that appeals to the band’s roots. “Knock me down so hard that I die”. Horror Show’s visceral lyrics deal with the effects of alcohol and drugs on the body. Even though Doherty was aware of the consequences he continued to use the band throughout his tenure. The variety of genres covered in Up The Bracket means that it can appeal to all aspects of the game. The parallels between alcohol and drugs that are so apparent between The Clash and The Libertines are what made Mick Jones the perfect person to create a great album.

The release of Up The Bracket in 2002 was surrounded by the return of Foo Fighter and Coldplay. So the group did not get the media it needed. But did they want to spread the news? Since no one knew who the group was, previous opinions were difficult to make by any newspaper. They could only be judged on how they sounded. Today everyone knows Pete Doherty as the junkie who went out with Kate Moss. However from songs like Boys In The Band and The Good Old Days it was clear that he knew how to write a song that could have many layers of interpretation. Boys In The Band is today’s best song, which is a band track. “And they all take it out…to the boys in the group” The conceit of such a song makes the audience think they are talking about sex. However according to the band’s history, The Libertines: Bound Together, it’s more about alcohol. About a week after the release of Up The Bracket the group was established.

As everyone got used to the amount of gigs, drugs and alcohol surrounding the album, Doherty and Barat’s vision soon became clear. I Get Along is a definitive show that uses Barat’s powerful vocals to send a message to the band’s critics. “People tell me I’m wrong…fuck ’em”. The word describes what a Libertine is – a free thinker. There were no rules, and there was no space between The Libertines and in Doherty’s case it gave him the power to do what he wanted, when he wanted.

Starting to treat himself (and Barat) various drugs, the media soon around the group. Doherty, whose influences range from Emily Bronte to Morrissey, believes that he was on the ship “Albion” that went to “Arcadia” – where there is no law or order. This vision is immediately recognized in (name of song) from Up The Bracket. (Insert Up The Bracket quote here). Doherty matches his vision as a tour of The Libertines, but when he and Barat get to know each other about the availability of other voices soon. “Death on the Stairs” is a song and lyrics (which Barat thought up) to describe people who grow old doing nothing but watching TV. “Don’t bring that ghost to my door” This song shows how the band wanted to stay away from the lyrics as much as possible. Ironically, the group, especially Pete, indulges in drugs and alcohol which can lead to their destruction. But at that time the Libertines could do no wrong.

Their biggest acclaim came from major music magazines, fronting NME who named them the best group in 2002. The Libertines were immersed in a fast life of drink, drugs and gigs. However, he was able to establish a relationship with the fans there. Time For Heroes shows how they saw themselves as the “savior” of that generation – “We will die in the class we were born into”. Doherty’s behavior seemed to reflect how the group was more about music than money. Despite being made up of a drummer, a bassist, and two guitarists, The Libertines made their intentions clear on Up The Bracket. The variety of styles followed by each song on the album showed his versatility.

The unique sound of The Libertines was not how they sounded, but what they said. In order to communicate with their listeners, some songs used clear words. “How divvy, how divvy” Doherty’s use of foul language did not make any song sound violent, but rather intelligent. In What A Waster (the first single) Doherty despite having 6 A* grades and 5 A’s at GCSE, used simple words. This turned out to be smart. Despite being heavily criticized by almost everyone, What A Waster appealed to its young audience. The first single managed to do what punk and rock ‘n roll were all about – to be heard across the country and make everyone angry at the same time.

The Libertine’s Up The Bracket not only reinvented rock music in many different ways, but became an inspiration to younger generations. Currently, Bloc Party, Arctic Monkeys and The Kooks are helping to continue what The Libertines started – raising young people to enjoy music, and the lifestyle that comes with it.
