Famous Supernatural Events in 19th Century America

Paranormal or paranormal phenomena have long been a popular topic, attracting the attention of both believers and skeptics. It seems that when anything that seems strange happens, especially when it involves such mysterious things as ghosts, it doesn’t take long for the neighbors to start talking, newspaper stories start to appear, and soon the story becomes nothing more than a myth. Over the years, these stories have been highly embellished, and recently they have become part of social culture. There are many interesting examples of these supernatural myths, and the following is a brief overview of three of the most popular.

Bell Witch – One of the most famous events in America happened in what is now Adams, Tennessee, on the property of John Bell in the early 1800s. The story begins in 1817 when John, a farmer, was working in one of his cornfields and saw an amazing animal. The creature appeared to have the body of a dog and the head of a rabbit, and John was quick to try to shoot the thing. After a few shots, the monster simply disappeared, and John returned to his home. In the evening of that day, loud noises began to be heard, as if something was hitting the outside of the building. John and his children went to investigate the sound and found nothing wrong, but this was only the beginning of the strange and terrible events that the family would suffer. Before long, the Bell children began to hear strange noises in their bedrooms, the covers being pulled at night, and painful kicks and whippings. Betsy Bell was the main recipient of this unusual event, but the rest of the family was also upset. Whispering, laughing, and crying were happening again, and soon John Bell was forced to tell his best friend and neighbor about the strange happenings. News of the abuse began to spread, and people as far away as Nashville became interested in what came to be known as The Bell Witch. As the years passed, the organization’s practices did not end; instead, they became more and more mature. Betsy continued to be tormented by the Witch, and it was not until the death of John Bell in December 1820 that the situation began to die down. Descendants of the Bell family have reported the ghost’s return several times, and to this day, locals report that strange things still happen around the old Bell site.

Lemp House – One of the best buildings in St. Louis from the 19th century and the Lemp Mansion, located in the center of the city. The building was built in the 1860s by tycoon Johann “Adam” Lemp, who became world famous for his lagers. Lemp and his sons built up a large brewery that spanned five city blocks, and were well known in St. Louis. Louis because of their wealth and power. With much success in the brewery, William Lemp, Sr., Adam’s son, built a 33-room mansion that became the family home for all the Lemps. Problems began in the family in 1901 when the beloved son of William died suddenly due to health, and continued to the Lemps with shameful divorces, a decline in the quality of mushrooms, Prohibition since 1920, and finally, several suicides. By 1922, three of Adam Lemp’s children had committed suicide, and another son did the same in 1949. After the brewery was completely closed and later sold, and the family name tarnished, the remaining Lemp descendants lived a quiet life. But it seems that the house was quiet. The devastating events began to be reported in the 1950s after the fourth suicide. At that time, the building was purchased and converted into a residential building. But with strange noises and scary footsteps that were heard in the house, the tenants did not delay. In 1975, the Lemp mansion was sold to Dick Pointer and turned into a restaurant and guest house. Visitors to the site have reported strange noises, feelings of being watched, and things moving by themselves. Although the Lemps have already left the house, it seems that their absence is physical, and that their spirits linger, unable to leave the family.

The Fox Sisters – Sisters Leah, Kate, and Margaret became without a doubt three of the most famous mediums in America when they began to receive messages from the dead in 1848. The stretch of people to believe that the girls were chosen by the spirit to be the link between the living and the dead. Through a series of knocks, a code was created where the girls asked yes-no and the spirit responded with another knock. This communication led to the discovery that the spirit was that of a murdered person who was buried in their room. Word spread quickly, and soon the girls became famous, traveling and holding public meetings. As interest in the Supernatural grew, so did the skepticism surrounding the Fox sisters, critics loudly proclaiming that they were frauds. It wasn’t many years later that Kate and Margaret admitted they were responsible for the knocking sounds, releasing them through the cracks in their knuckles. Although they admitted to having deceived people about their spiritual communication, their story inspired a growing interest in the supernatural and remains one of the most famous examples of spiritual phenomena today.
