Great Golf at Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa

In the heart of Texas, you’ll find the gem of a Texas golf resort at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa in San Antonio. This beautiful AAA Four-Diamond resort lives up to its moniker of “full-scale destination resort” with 27 holes of golf, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a fun pool, an award-winning restaurant and more for the whole family to enjoy. All of these fun things to do in the Texas sun are close to a lodge that looks like a ranch house.

You don’t even need to leave the hotel’s secluded location with all its amenities and dining options. It’s easy to forget you’re in beautiful San Antonio, with all its attractions. The property is close to SeaWorld Texas attractions and a short drive to other top San Antonio attractions such as The Alamo, San Antonio’s River Walk, and Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park.

But for those of us who love golf, the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa offers golfers’ pleasure at the Hill Country Golf Club. With 27-holes, great practice and the challenging nature of the Texas mountains, you’ll understand why this course was named one of the top ten courses in the US by Golf Magazine when it opened. The resort has also garnered attention as one of the top golf destinations in the Conde Nast Traveler Golf Poll.

Award-winning golf course design firm Arthur Hills and Associates took great care not only to take advantage of the slopes they worked with in South Central Texas but also to protect the environment. The result is three different 9-hole golf courses, each with its own unique landscape.

As soon as you arrive at the clubhouse, you will receive the support of a country club. The friendly staff will take care of all your needs before you head to the three 9-hole courses for your first round. The Oaks, Creeks, and Lakes courses feature wetlands, wooded streams, and scenery that challenge your senses and imagination. The beautiful ponds are complemented by well-placed bunkers and green holes to test your game on each hole.

Each nine plays up to 36 and ranges from 2300 – 3500 yards depending on the four choices. The variety of tees caters to players of all abilities and the course is “women’s friendly”, winning the top award on Golf for Women magazine’s Top Fairways list. It’s hard to pick a favorite of the three, so you’ll have the chance to play a few days and see all three at least once.

The Oaks Course plays to 3,438 yards from the tees and offers a good range of hole lengths. As the name suggests, you will have tall oak trees to compete with so be sure to study the tee holes. There are favorite parts of the fairway when planning your shot on the 4th hole. Don’t just hit the driver on the 400-yard par-4 hole…you have to think your way through all the holes on the course and a small club off the tee can be the perfect play.

The 420 yard fourth at the Oaks will challenge your strength and accuracy. You need to be long and accurate off the tee to set up a fairway across the river to the challenging green. The fifth and eighth can be an easy set of par 3s on the whole nine, although a few shots on the fifth will cost you a penalty in the river so make sure you use the right club. You’ll finish your round with a nice downhill par 5 with a chance for birdie as you approach the large green you share with the closing hole of Creeks.

Another good tip to remember when playing at Hill Country Golf Club is to keep the ball down the hole on your shots. Downhill putts aren’t very exciting and you’ll get three-putts if you’re not on the bottom of the hole. This is probably true of any course but it rings true in the Texas Hill Country.

In 2005, the resort renovated its original 18-hole course to create a new 9-hole course to make the resort a 27-hole track. Many new holes are found on the 3429-yard Creeks Course. This back nine has a lot of character and a chance to get the opening two holes before being challenged by one of the most difficult par-3 holes on the golf course, the 222-yard third. Par is the best score on this difficult hole.

You will face the ‘rivers’ in the Creeks Course starting with the beautiful par-5 fourth, a true three-shot course to the green at 538 yards with water to protect the green. The difficult seventh gets a lot of handicap on the side with good reason. The river runs to the left and in front of the green to the left of the dog. You’ll end up with a spectacular descent on the 5th with access to the top floor. Water and bunkers protect the main green but you can have a green light to move on your approach if you leave left.

The Lakes Course is the longest of the three, measuring over 3500 yards from the back tee. You will face your toughest test in the long third session. Keep your shot to the left to have a corner of the green protected by sand on the left and the long sea on the right. You’ll enjoy the short ninth, where your best bet is a long iron or hybrid from the tee to the right of the fairway and leaving you to mill over the river to a very steep fairway.

After the easy fifth, you will face four difficult holes to complete. The sixth is the first of two tough par-5 holes on the Lake side. The tee shot has a dangerous lake on the left and a dry bed that curves in from the left fairway and goes through it. Your second is a narrow slope before approaching a well-protected green with water on the right. After the tough seventh, you’ll face the long fairway on the par 5 eighth, a short 560-yard hole on the left. Stay off the tee or you’ll struggle to get to the green.

You’ll enjoy some of the amenities at the golf club, including GPS systems in the golf carts that provide yardage and helpful tips. Before you start your round, you can get comfortable in the locker room before warming up on the beautiful golf course, which has greens, large greens, and lots of traffic.

It’s easy to develop a passion for the round and you should look for good food and sit in the clubhouse overlooking the course after writing your score. Cactus Oak Tavern offers classic but delicious American cuisine, including burgers, salads, and sandwiches in a casual setting with TVs and tables. Take the time to visit the pro shop to select the best golf apparel and equipment.

While golf may be the main reason you visit the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa, you should consider why the resort chose to include the word “Spa” in its name. The answer lies in the wonderful Windflower Hill Country Spa. Located just a stone’s throw from the golf course, this peaceful resort is a throwback to the late 1800s and early 20s, including a red barn. The “Tee Time” package is perfect for the golfer after a day in the hot Texas sun, featuring a Golfer’s Massage and a rejuvenating facial and pedicure.

The park is reserved for the adults in the family, but don’t think for a second that there isn’t much to do for the whole family. This place really has something to keep everyone busy or as relaxed as they want. You’ll be able to cycle around nature trails (bike and helmet rentals are available) or run around well-known trails. Since the hotel is an Audubon protected area, you will have the opportunity to see the 100 species of birds that call this place home. Let the kids play on the playground filled with slides, swings, tetherball, and volleyball.

But perhaps the most interesting will be at the center of the four-acre reservoir. Swim on an inner tube along the 950-foot Ramblin’ River or play in the sand on the man-made beach. For fun in the water, you can play water volleyball in the free sports pool. For adults, there is an adults-only pool in Texas that has a waterfall or an adults-only hot tub instead.

Hyatt Hill Country Resort- Like most resorts in the Hyatt family, the children’s programs are second to none. Camp Hyatt is an award-winning children’s program that takes special care of your children between the ages of 3 and 12 while you visit the links or the spa. In the spirit of Texas, the camp hosts activities such as archery, learning to read the stars or home crafts. You can also give your kids a taste of fun at the SpahhhT Youth Spa, featuring facials, massages, body treatments, and nail services for those under 17. Teens will also appreciate the Underground Teen Space, a lounge where you can check email, play video games, and slurp up a smoothie.

With so much going on outside, it’s no surprise that Hill Country accommodations are the best. The hotel’s Town Square is at the center of the resort and is home to a century-old Live Oak tree. You can sit on Aunt Mary’s Porch in the morning preparing for the day’s activities. Inside, the lobby combines the elegance of a world-class resort with the excitement of a family vacation destination. The 500 guest rooms surround the picturesque grounds and the peaceful tranquility after dark.

Of course, a world class resort wouldn’t be complete without great food and the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort does not disappoint. If you’re in the mood for a good cup ‘o Joe, head to Hill Country Coffee & Creamery. Enjoy pastries and water in comfortable lounge chairs and Wi-Fi service. For something more exciting, head to the Springhouse Cafe for a buffet breakfast. For lunch, there are sandwiches, soups, and salads, while for dinner you can enjoy succulent meats, pasta, and seafood. The Antlers Lounge is Hill Country Hyatt’s signature restaurant, named after a chandelier made from 500 sets of antlers (all naturally shed). Serving traditional Texan cuisine, you can enjoy Bison Tenderloin while sitting by the fireplace and private tables.

If you want something to do outside of this area, you will have many choices including the 33 acres of San Antonio Botanical Gardens with a unique flower, sacred, and authentic Japanese garden. The San Antonio Zoological Garden and Aquarium is home to over 750 species, including kangaroos, rhinos, and tigers. Go visit Shamu, Clydesdales, penguins, and dolphins at SeaWorld. For some great activities, head to Six Flags Fiesta Texas where you’ll get an adrenaline rush from rides like The Rattler, Superman Krypton, and Poltergeist.

Guests can plan all of their activities before leaving the hotel with the Hyatt E-concierge app. From the comfort of your computer log on to http://www.hyatte-concierge.com, and you will be able to schedule dining and entertainment, as well as game time, transportation, and more. In addition to customers, the Hill Country Hyatt participates in the Babies Travel Lite Program (www.babiestravellite.com). You’ll have all of baby’s needs at your hotel, from formula to diapers, and everything in between, making the resort family-friendly.

The award-winning Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa is home to many of our guests, making you feel at home in the perfect setting. So, pack your bags and your Stetson and head to the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa.
