Architecture Wonder in Singapore
Architecture in Singapore has adopted many different styles and designs of buildings can be commercial, political and religious. In most cases, new and old buildings, whether they are new or more than 100 years old, have been designed by architects from neighboring or distant countries.
Many buildings also have European architecture because Singapore was ruled by the British. Britain itself built the best and most beautiful buildings in its country that were made by craftsmen from other European regions or local craftsmen who were influenced by architecture from other European countries.
The British people made sure to spend a lot of money in building beautiful and big buildings to show the glory and power of the British Empire. The British preferred houses with large spaces, often clad in marble. One such building is the former Supreme Court building, which was completed in 1939, three years before World War II arrived in Singapore. The British colonial government did not spend a lot of money on construction. They commissioned an Italian architect named Rudolfo Nolli to design a building that would reflect their purpose.
Nolli made 4-5 different plans for the new building, of which only one could be accepted. He was one of the few architects in Singapore at the time who used flexible building materials. It was known as precast concrete. The new house he built had columns and pillars that needed to be clear. It is also due to the fact that the land where the old Supreme Court building stands is sea land. Sea soil is very soft and cannot overburden anything made of rock. Climate was also considered as inappropriate building materials not adapted to the local climate could cause the building to collapse or rot over time. A wooden house was not really necessary because even if the soil could hold its own weight, the house would not last more than 10 years.
Rodolfo Nolli had a pre-made concrete factory where he personally supervised the design and construction of the capitals, the carved columns, the lion heads that act as rainwater and the sculptures that decorate the interior of the main central area. There is much more to this beautiful and charming home. Above the balcony of the building are paintings depicting the founding of modern Singapore with Stamford Raffles signing the treaty in which Singapore was handed over to the British East India Company by the Sultan of Johore. Shown in the photo is the Sultan’s right-hand man, Temengong Abdul Rahman. Another photo shows Chinese immigrants in their daily lives. The same picture also shows Indian and Arab traders selling their goods. The crowning glory of the whole building is the Renaissance dome and central building. This building was built very similar to Saint Paul’s Cathedral in London, United Kingdom.
But in the middle of the pediment, it boasts of 7 before cast concrete statues, which show Justice in the middle and other symbols shown in the appearance of a person in accordance with the law. One interesting statue that is worthy is a female statue on the left side of the statue showing gratitude to Justice. Rudolfo Nolli was an architect who was very fond of sculpture. He needed a human model to show the human emotions necessary for this image. He decided to ask his daughter to model for his idol and she agreed. Imagine the skill and passion this architect had for his work! Thanks to his enthusiasm, Singapore now boasts of a beautiful and luxurious building to be proud of. The old Supreme Court building on the banks of the Padang River is one of the buildings that have been built over time and have become well known.
