Songwriting Tips – A Common Problem That Songwriters Face

“I’m 16 years old and the biggest problem is, I know what I want to write, but when I write it I think it sounds lame.” He is now 16 years old, but I have no doubt that this problem transcends all ages.

The truth is, almost everything I *put* I thought sounded lame too…at first. We all need to understand that most of the time you won’t write a ‘great song’ the first time. It doesn’t happen that way.

I always jokingly tell aspiring songwriters that “you’re not in the music writing business, but if… you’re in the editing business”.

By this I mean, you are not ‘writing music’, but ‘making music’. That’s why they call it art, and that’s how you should think. It’s about constantly tweaking and refining your music until you feel it’s right for other listeners. Once you have the music down, don’t let it stop there. Trust me, it’s not over.

There may be exceptions to this rule, but in general – you will still have work to do.

Listen to the verse… could it do with a change in music? Does it fit well with the chorus or the Pre-Chorus? Is the song clear? Step out of the song for a moment…can you sing the song if there is an outsider listening? Did this song touch you? What can you do to change it?

Now, you don’t need to go crazy here. Don’t opt ​​for a little knock-off and every crazy thing – this will only drive you crazy. Take the first example of what you think you can do and resume, then DO IT. Edit… and edit well.

Pitching your own song is probably one of the hardest parts of songwriting – but it CAN be done easily. It involves taking a break from your music and looking at it a little.
