Occupational Therapy – Infrared Heat Heals Computer Cold Mouse Hand Pain

Occupational Therapy Intervention is one of the most promising, results-oriented work-saving interventions a person can experience in a lifetime. A healthy, healing intervention saves work, restores hope, a worker’s self-confidence and self-esteem. This story is about the loss of hand movement, and the positive results of an OT intervention.

Losing the function of a hand can be devastating, especially when the hand needs to work at the computer all day. Finding a new job is not easy and almost impossible in today’s economic situation. Rehabilitation of an injury is a lot of work. Of the two choices, we choose rehabilitation. The alternative to not holding down a job is not an option.

The loss of use in a person’s computer mouse due to arthritis and poor circulation can make daily computer work painful and excruciating. Pain in the hands of a sick computer mouse causes hands to cramp, freeze and fingers become numb. Pills are not always the solution and are not an attractive idea. The only relief does not work, and is not a suggested option.

Most occupational interventions rely on intelligence and creativity. For our computer mouse hand injury, we relied on a mouse warmer blanket holster to hold the computer mouse and mouse pad. The blanket is made of pieces and covers the hands of the computer user completely creating a warm home for the mouse and mouse pad. We put inside the mouse hand warmer blanket holster a USB mouse warmer and USB mouse warmer pad to generate heat inside the blanket holster housing.

The USB heating devices are made of a carbon fiber. Carbon fiber generates infrared heat. Infrared heat is healing. The sun is an example of a natural source of infrared heat. The Eastern Medical Profession has used the healing effects of infrared heat for thousands of centuries. The Western world is beginning to catch on to the healing effects of infrared heat through infrared saunas and now occupational computer devices.

It is documented evidence by therapists and doctors worldwide, 20-30 minutes a day of infrared heat has healing effects on an injury, in this case, in the hand. I conducted a 4-week study using a hand heated mouse blanket, an infrared heated mouse and infrared heated mouse pad with a person suffering from arthritis and poor circulation in the hand of the computer mouse.
