Treating The Common Viral Infections In Children
Colds and flu are the two most common viral infections that affect children. Unfortunately there is no cure for the common cold and flu because most antibiotics have no effect on these viruses. As a parent, the best thing you can do is keep your baby comfortable by making sure he gets enough rest and drinks plenty of fluids. In this article we will discuss some easy ways to deal with viral infections such as cold and flu.
Relieves a stuffy nose
• For babies, a rubber suction bulb can be used to suck drainage from the nasal passages. Your child will breathe more freely by suctioning the clogged mucus out of the nose.
• Using 1-2 drops of saline (salt water) per nostril greatly helps in relieving nasal congestion.
• Place a vaporizer or cool humidifier in your child’s room to prevent nasal secretions from drying out. The humidifier would provide the extra moisture that would make your baby more comfortable.
Cough Relief
• Give your child a teaspoon of honey at bedtime to treat a cough. However, if your child is below 1 year, then honey is not recommended at all.
• If your child is 4 years old or older, then you can give them cough lozenges or cough drops.
Fever Relief
• If your child is very uncomfortable with a high fever, a dose of ibuprofen may help reduce the fever. Be careful not to give any medicine to children under 2 years of age without consulting your pediatrician. Although ibuprofen can be given to children older than 6 months, it is still better not to take any risks. Do not give ibuprofen to a child who is vomiting or dehydrated.
Treatment and Prevention
Flu vaccine
• Children over 6 months of age need to get the flu shot every year. Children under 6 months old are too young to get the flu shot, so they should take extra care to check that people around them are not infected.
Medication
• Never give your baby (under 4) over-the-counter cough and cold medicine, as most have serious side effects. If the pediatrician prescribes antibiotics, make sure your child takes them exactly as prescribed. Continue giving the medications even after they get better. If you suddenly stop the antibiotics, the virus becomes immune and can start spreading in the body.
Last but not least, if flu or cold symptoms last for more than 3 days, make an appointment with your doctor to get a proper diagnosis and treatment.
