How to Hula Dance – It All Starts With "Hula Basics"

You know absolutely nothing about how to dance Hula, but you joined a Hula dance class in your neck of the woods because the art form is absolutely beautiful and breathtaking and you want to learn it.
As you prepare to attend your first class, you finally realize that joining the class was the easy part…
Now you have to actually GO there.
You may feel insecure because:
1. You know absolutely nothing about how to hula dance,
2. You hope that your teacher is not strict and psycho Hitler type, Et
3. You’re afraid your hula skirt will fall off in the middle of class, exposing your two-year-old panties (lol).
Can you relate to this scenario?
Whatever your fears can be overcome with knowledge. Yes, knowledge erases fear and it is here that you will find a little knowledge about how to dance Hula.
Hula Basics
To learn the “whole”, one must first break it into “parts”. Therefore, in many beginner Hula classes the teacher will train you in the basic Hula hand and foot movements before fully stringing it up to teach you a Hula dance.
Hula Basics includes repetitive training in hand and footwork as well as proper posture until it becomes second nature to you.
The following is a list and description of the four Hula steps that are important to master in order to succeed in learning how to hula dance:
1. Kaholo – This stage is often known as the “vamp” stage. It starts with you standing tall with both heels together. Use your right foot, go to the right and let the left foot follow suit. This is repeated for two steps to the right and is done in the count of 4. Repeat this step 4 counts in the opposite direction (left) to complete a “set” kaholo (once right, once left). Repeat these sets over and over until you feel your body flowing and gliding smoothly.
2. Hello – This step starts with knees bent, heels together and toes pointed 45 degrees (if you look down, your feet should form a “V”). Next, transfer your weight to the left hip and foot while extending the right leg fully forward until you finish the step and point your toes. Return the extended right leg, shift your weight to the opposite hip and foot (right), then extend the left leg forward and point. If after repeating the Hela series you feel your upper thigh muscles “burn” then you are doing this step correctly đŸ™‚
3. “Uwehe (oo weh’ heh) – Start in the same foot position as Hela, lift your right foot, shift your weight to the left hip and foot. After that, lower the right leg, transfer your weight to the right hip and foot. Next, lift both heels and push both knees forward while swaying the hips (`uwehe means to open, reveal or uncover). As with the previous steps, repeat the ‘Uwehe each time with the other foot.
4. Lele (leh’ leh) – Starting in the same foot position as Hela, take a step forward on your right foot, lifting the left back heel. Next, transfer the weight from the left hip to the right hip. Repeat this forward 4 times (alternate feet and weight shift) then backward 4 times. (Lele means to fly, leap or jump.)
By studying, understanding, and practicing (perfectly and often) these basic Hula steps, you’ll be well on your way to learning how to Hula!
