Almighty God Intervened, and Intervenes, Spectacularly – And Continues to Do So Today

Do you really know that this is how God worked in the past, and how He continues to work and move, inspire and strengthen today?

Isaiah 61 and Luke Chapter 4 – “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because the Lord has chosen me to preach good news to the poor – He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted.”

After all the rather difficult and harsh truths given to Isaiah to proclaim during his long prophetic ministry, God placed these words in his heart.

We are reading here about how God would intervene spectacularly.

As we approach this season that many call ‘Advent’ – in a year unlike any other – we so desperately need the comforting grace of our merciful God and the love of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit – and where the best are open . our hearts go through the truth and the truth of the Scriptures.

Isaiah felt that the Spirit of the Lord God was upon him.

Isaiah knew God had anointed him – it can make a person speak boldly and boldly – it can also make a person tremble. When you speak, you tremble – and when you don’t speak, you tremble.

Without God’s Spirit, we would have no living message to preach – and without God’s Spirit we cannot receive and embrace the word that is preached and proclaimed.

The good news of God needs the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

There was a time in Isaiah’s ministry when he had to do something new and say something fresh – and for these works God gave Isaiah the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

It all seems so remarkably simple and straight forward at first reading.

The good news was given to the poor – to those who were exiled – and driven out of their homes – because of their sins, and the sins of their parents.

They came to break their hearts, and God sent Isaiah with a word of healing, uplifting and encouraging – and it was also a word of freedom – and a word of hope and strength.

God has not forgotten His people – He never will.

Verses 1 to 5 – Those who were captives by the river Babylon would be freed, released and delivered from this prison – and they would be blessed. Isaiah stands tall here.

This is our God – always wants to bless his people – but also deals with those who oppose him. Those who were sad and grieving would be comforted and strengthened.

Isaiah describes how God would bless his people –

Beauty for ashes – We give these ashes to God and in return God gives us beauty, in our hearts and in our minds and lives.

Ashes remind us of dust – of death. The sackcloth and ashes refer to penance. The ashes of our hopes and dreams – exchanged for a crown of beauty.

Joyful Oil for Grief – In place of grief, God gives us the oil of joy – a healing and fullness and strength, when we need it most.

Praise for Despair – A garment of praise replaces a spirit of despair.

Many people are experiencing despair these days. For many it is a time of disappointment and turmoil, and even defeat. Isaiah speaks of God removing that garment and replacing it with a garment of praise.

God comforts us through His Word – through the Holy Spirit – and through His people.

The Lord will plant people to show his glory. This is one of the main purposes of God’s people – to show His beauty – His glory.

There are times when God takes you and plants you for one purpose – to reflect His beauty and glory, majesty and power.

Isaiah is waiting for that day when the Messiah will appear – when Jesus Christ will come.

The Gospel blessings that the Messiah brings are not primarily physical, but spiritual. God wants to have a people that would show his glory.

God will plant man – the oak of righteousness – meaning strength, solidity, and stability – as well as beauty – with a degree of permanence.

Zion was devastated by the invader – but God will restore as he replants. We had an invader invade the nations.

Luke 4 verses 13 to 21 – Jesus overcame the devil’s temptation – and returned to Nazareth.

On the Sabbath, Jesus went to the ‘church service’ – as he used to – his custom – his model – his example – in the dry old synagogue in Nazareth. The fault of the church at the time did not prevent Jesus from going as a sincere worshiper. If there was a void, Jesus would fill that void with meaning, significance and importance.

Jesus was invited to read the scripture, and he turned to Isaiah 61.

We can read these verses in light of Calvary and Resurrection and Pentecost

Jesus came to do all the things that Isaiah had prophesied – but now he would not be limited to Israel – Jesus would expand and expand the scope of his ministry.

These words in Isaiah speak of the Messiah. Big concepts are proclaimed.

Isaiah sees a day when strangers and foreigners will come to Israel and will do much work among the flocks and in the fields – verses 5 and 6 – so that those who have been called by God to serve spiritually will be free to do so – and have time to do so. It is simply a division of functions.

Where sin has created devastation and ruin – God builds and restores – for His glory. The Gospel is not a small Gospel – it is for Jews and Gentiles – which does not exclude anyone.

Israel was to go to all nations – we are called to go into all the world.

God intervened – through Isaiah, and various other prophets – but supremely through Jesus – at the right time – not a late moment.

Advent – this season when many remember that Jesus Christ is coming again – when he finally intervenes as Judge – the first time Jesus came as the Savior – the second time he comes as Judge – and it will not be a moment late. Let this encourage and sustain you today.

And – if you need our almighty God to intervene in a special and specific way in your life – or situation – or circumstances – ask him – because our God intervened and intervened.

“Our merciful God – we have seen how you intervened through the years – and even in the past years, Lord Jesus, you poured out your Holy Spirit once again – and many of us drank water this life that has come back. A reservoir within. We give thanks and praise to God, for all that you have done in our lives over the years. Amen
