Deer Hunting With Your Kids – 9yr Old Son Calls in Nice 8pt Buck for 50yr Old Dad

  • Deer hunting with your kids can help instill family values.

On Friday, November 11, 2011, my youngest son (9) and I stopped for a kneeling prayer on our way out for an evening deer hunt. We thanked the Lord for the opportunity to hunt together and asked for his guidance. We also asked that we might have a successful hunt or learn something that would put us one step closer to a successful hunt, and that we would have a safe hunt.

  • Short hunts are perfect when deer hunting with your kids.

From the time we stopped and set up we had less than 40 minutes until the “Hunt Ends” calendar alarm would start vibrating on my phone. There is not much time – some may have passed the opportunity thinking that it was not worth walking a quarter of a kilometer to hunt for a while. Decades of experience have taught me to get out – because you certainly will not shoot a deer if you talk yourself out of hunting when you have the opportunity.

  • Include your children in the decision-making process – guide them through it.

I talked to my son about 4 spots we could go to that was set up for two people. I told him one of them we should probably calculate was too far on the other side of the road for the time we had to hunt – it would take us too long to walk there – so that left us with 3 options on the side our. road He thought we should go to one of our back corners and suggested the SW corner. I told him I agreed we should go to one of our corners but because of the wind direction I thought the other corner – the SE corner might be better – so we agreed to go to the SE corner.

  • Give your kids something to do while hunting – preferably make them part of the hunt.

Then I put my son in charge of calling. Before we went out, I let him choose between just the case of the estrus bleat or the whole bell sequence. He chose to go with just the case of bleat estrus. (If I were on my own, I would have chosen the rake because the buck heard it at longer distances – timing was good for either call approach, so I abandoned his choice.)

  • Modify tactics to fit shorter hunts.

Since we stopped with little hunting time left I explained to my son that we probably should not wait the typical 20-30 minutes before calling – instead we would wait about 5 minutes. (We did our best to sneak around – move a little – stop and observe a little – move a little – so we sounded like deer rather than people moving through the woods.)

  • Mentor your kids throughout the deer hunt with the “woods wisdom” you’ve learned.

During the five minutes our wait was about to expire I heard a squirrel scolding something well in the South of us. I explained to my son that we couldn’t tell what this squirrel was upset about but it was most likely something moving in the woods to our south. It could be another human hunter, someone’s cat, a fox or coyote, or maybe a deer, maybe even a buck. I told him I think we should start calling just in case this squirrel scolded a buck we couldn’t see. Then I train him as to when to call – how long to wait before calling again – and if they do one bleat or two or three bleats in a row. He did a great job painting the sound picture of an estrous doe waiting near a scratch (a mock scratch with a scent dripper on it) and calling for a buck. Daylight was fading fast as he left the last two blues. Within seconds of those last two bleats I spotted a deer heading north on our non-hunting property. I said to my son “We have one coming – it’s a buck – it’s a nice buck.” I was not in position to fire a crossbow when it hit the first line of fire on our property, but I was in position to fire a shot as it passed through our farm to another farm we have permission to hunt. I mouthed to stop it – got it in our GT Flex crossbow scope – put the 30 yard reticle on top of the heart area and pressed the shot. I heard the arrow/bolt hit the deer but I couldn’t see where I hit.

After watching and listening to where the money went after the shot, I pulled out my phone and it read 5:49 pm – exactly one minute before Hunting End time. Typically we wait 30 minutes after an archery hit on a deer before going down to look unless we see the deer fall and stay down. I explained to my son that with the light fading fast we should assume a good hit and try to find the beginning of the blood trail before we lose the last bit of light – then if we hit the money up we would do back off and wait again. . We went down and thanked the Lord and asked for His help in recovering the money. Then we tried to take advantage of the rapidly fading light to find the beginning of the blood trail but very quickly realized it would be smarter to head up to the house and get a bigger, more powerful flashlight than the 1Watt LED I brought .

I took the opportunity at home from my ScentLok and in jeans, etc. that I would not mind the smell of diesel exhaust and deer blood on. We prayed again for the Lord’s help to recover the money before we traveled out with 2 – two “D” cells LED MagLite and while we were walking, I explained to my son that often mortally wounded deer head for thick cover and water. I suggested that based on the direction of travel when hitting this buck it would likely either go North from the woods to the nearby corn stand or could go NNE to the swale because of the water there. Accordingly we looked at the exit points of the woods (in corn or swale) as well as scanning corn stalks for blood – we did not find any. I suggested that maybe he didn’t get far or he had headed further east where there was thick cover and water inside this woodlot. We went into the woods and I explained that we should look everywhere on the ground as we worked our way from where we thought he went to where the arrow/bolt hit him because we might just find the buck before us. back to where he was. hit If we did not find it then we should find and follow the blood trail. As we moved together, my nine year old son suddenly looked back and to the side and said “there it is daddy!” So this beautiful 8pt called in by a 9yr old – shot by a 50yr old – then found by a 9yr old. We weighed it before and after field dressing. Before field dressing he weighed 198 pounds. After field dressing he weighed 160 pounds. — Oh, my son said “Next year you’re the one calling daddy!” And I’ll be happy to be his “caller” – I can’t wait to help him tag his first deer. It was a GREAT hunt. Praise God from all the blessings that come out!! Happy Hunting!!
