Valuable Routine Checklist for Your Bearded Dragons Care Sheet
For proper care of your reptile you can follow a routine schedule on a daily, weekly, monthly, bi-annual and yearly basis. The following is a bearded dragon care sheet, which lists essential functions to keep your dragons happy and healthy.
Everyday:
• Feed your lizard and replace the water bowl with fresh water
• Remove food dishes and clean them after eating
• Clear the eating area of any uneaten food
• Clean the substrate from any toilet or faecal matter
• Check your dragon for any visual signs of illness or problems with skin shedding
• Spend some time with your pet outside the fence
Every week:
• Bathe your dragon beard
• Trim the reptile’s toenails
• Clean the enclosure well, clean everything such as branches and stones
• Clean the surroundings of your cage including the bottom and back of the tank
• Check that all heating and lighting equipment is working
• Take your dragon outside to bask in the sun
Every month:
• Remove all cage components and wash the tank with a bleaching agent. Let it dry completely under the sun.
Bi-annual:
• Remove and replace an inch of the top layer of the substrate for all the cages that you keep outside.
Every year:
• Visit your vet. Take your pet and stool sample to check for any parasites or diseases.
Additionally be aware of the nutritional needs of your juvenile and adult dragons. Below is a list of the basic food proportions and varieties needed to make a healthy diet for your bearded dragon thus ensuring a healthy and long life for your reptile.
For young and old:
• 50 percent: – pre-eaten insects with full intestines including crickets, mealworms, wax worms and once or twice give them a penky mouse.
• 30 percent: – green vegetables rich in calcium such as alfalfa, collards, mustard, dandelion, spinach, cabbage, broccoli and green beans.
• 10 percent: – other vegetables such as zucchini, peppers, roasted carrots, tomatoes and sprouts.
• 10 percent: – other foods such as bread, cereals and commercial foods.
Adults can eat once a day and youngsters twice a day. Young dragon vegetables should be cut into smaller pieces and given to smaller insects so that they can eat easily. For babies, as they are growing rapidly, they should be given more protein and feed twice a day. The food ratio should be 60 percent protein, 25 percent calcium vegetables and 15 percent other foods.
By making a care list for your dragon, you reduce the risk of forgetting to do one of the tasks and neglecting your pet.
Your dragons should be removed from their cages from time to time so to properly care for your pet there are some dos and don’ts:
1. Do not grab him by the tail.
2. Don’t grab it suddenly without warning.
3. Make the approach slow and gentle.
4. Place a finger under the chin and extend down the body.
5. Move the babies and the perch they lie on.
6. Support the dragon in the palm of your hand, its head facing you.
7. Do not press and squeeze any part of his body.
8. Don’t grab him in your fist if he keeps running away. But rather block his path with one hand and not cave in with your finger gently lift it up.
