Top Five Teething Toys
My little Abigail was a calm, happy little elf. He rarely cried, slept through the night early, and was generally a joy to be around. I told everyone I knew how amazing it was. That’s what I get for opening my big mouth! Apparently someone notified the teething gods of my arrogance, and at 5 months old Abigail started teething. Then my world changed overnight as I was faced with a drooling, howling, whimpering bunch of wretches. The only way we got through it was with baby Tylenol and some big teething toys.
- Abigail’s favorite was the simplest one – a gel-filled ring that I kept in the fridge. Actually, I bought half a dozen of these. I quickly found that my toddler liked to suck on them too, and we lost several over the course of a month (I later found two of them under the couch, covered in rabbit dust). Fortunately, these can be found in almost any supermarket, and are typically only a few dollars.
- Massage Teether. This had a handle to hold, and gently massage Abigail’s swollen gums. He had to be in the right mood for it, but sometimes he performed miracles.
- Crooked teeth. We had a variety of sounds and rings that offered various surfaces. Some had rounded tips, others had crusts, and some had smooth, hard surfaces. These come in a million beautiful shapes and sizes. We had an elephant with ridged ears, a bear with nubby feet and hands, a crackly star and a caterpillar with every possible texture and shape. One of Abigail’s favorites, however, was a set of teething beads, mostly because it was easy for her to hold.
- Vinyl book. Even though they weren’t in the market for teethers at the time, Abigail had a set of vinyl baby books. They were titled Baby’s Big Day, Baby’s Bedtime and Baby’s Puppy. They should have title baby stop crying from toothache. He gnaws at them continuously. Now there are books marketed specifically as teething books, but any of the baby books will work just fine.
- Soft toys. Even though they were kind of gross after being chewed on, Abigail seemed to chew on her soft dolls and toys a lot. They are machine washable – which is good because they get very soggy and smell disgusting after chewing all day. You can find several soft teething toys on the market now. Again, we had at least half a dozen of these, which was good, because half of them were still in the laundry. With a teething baby, I was lucky if the family had their own matching socks!
In addition to traditional teething toys, Abigail loved cookies, crusts, popsicles and fingers (and once she got a couple of teeth, I learned to keep my fingers out of her mouth!)
In the end, Abigail and I made it through the teeth without going crazy. He is now at dentist appointments, and orthodontics.
