Review of Bright Starts Spots and Stripes Safari Gym
We bought this toy gym for Toby after trying one terrible Lamaze. We were looking for something that would entertain him and help him develop his coordination and attention skills.
The gym was very easy to set up and ready to use in a few minutes. To look at, the gym is very attractive. It has black and white spots that are great to catch a very young baby’s attention when they can only really see high contrasts. Some of the attachments are also black and white which again, is great for a young baby. As well as the great contrast of black and white, there are a variety of colors on the arches of the gym and the actual playing mat. Toby likes to look at the colors now that he is a bit older.
The gym comes with several attachments. The best by far is the musical tiger that is attached to the top of the gym. The tiger has 20 minutes of music and flashing lights. Toby can sit and watch these for hours! He waved his little arms and legs when it turned on and the closest he came to laughing was as he lay down looking at the lights. He calls us if the sound and light go, so he must love it, in fact, he smiles more than his father or I do! The music tiger has 3 settings with 2 different volumes, one setting plays some music tunes (warning – you will hum these tunes to yourself, sing along to them even dream about them), and the other setting plays nature sounds – birds , cricket etc. Toby’s favorite is the music as the lights flash more. The third setting is a touch sensitive version of the Melody, it shuts off after 30 seconds or so of no touch, not useful now but I imagine they’ll be great once Toby is big enough to figure it out. The tiger is also great because it is removable, which means it can come with us on its stroller, its bouncer and in the car. I would say the tiger alone is probably worth the money we spent at the gym. My only criticism of the gym comes here – it would be nice to be able to put the tiger on silent and still have the lights on. After a while, listening to the same songs over and over again can become a bit annoying.
The gym comes with quite a few attachments, as I said before, some are black and white and some are colorful. One of the great things about the gym is that you can set up where you want these attachments and move them as much as possible, this keeps Toby on his toes. It also comes with extra hoops so that you can attach your own toys, there are many different places where you can hang or attach objects. Toby’s second favorite toy is what we refer to as ‘Jingly Tiger’. As the name might suggest, Jingly Tiger jingles when it hits. Toby loves the sound it makes and his coordination has come a long way from having Jingly Tiger hanging above him on the bed. The gym also has a grass rattle that is currently hanging above Toby but I suspect he will make a great independent toy when he is bigger. Other attachments include a butterfly and toothpicks which at the moment are purely for decoration, although make a fun sound when knocked against the other hanging toys. Toby is a bit young for teethers but the leaves in particular smell nice, so I imagine they will be quite a hit once he is old enough.
The gym also comes with a removable mirror that can be attached to the side of the gym, again I think this will be more useful for when Toby is a bit older. The final thing the gym comes with a giraffe pillow. This is meant for when your baby tries to do mini push-ups. The idea is that the giraffe can be placed under your baby’s arm as support. I’ve tried this a few times with Toby and he’s not too impressed, I think it’s a bit too soon. That being said, the only place it will remotely entertain the idea of belly time is on the play gym mat.
The gym also folds in half with the arches still attached so it is very easy to transport or hide. The arches are also removable for when the baby is a bit bigger and just needs a comfortable bed to sit on.
Overall, the rug is one of the best purchases we’ve made, we use it several times a day and it’s well worth the money. Sometimes if Toby has a little problem to solve, or if I need to go on with other things, I can put him on his bed and he is entertained. More often than not, she will fall asleep on her bed (and then wake up to call you because the music is playing), so I often put a small pillow under her head and a blanket over her and let her sleep for a while. I would definitely recommend this rug from newborn and imagine it will be great until Toby is several months old. I only wish we had bought it sooner rather than what we bought first.
I give the Spots and Stripes Safari Gym a 9/10
