Friendship Day: Ten Ways to Celebrate on August 5, 2007

Every year, a holiday sneaks up on the first Sunday in August: International Friendship Day, a day set aside to honor friendship of any kind. International Friendship Day was born in 1935, when the US Congress declared this day a national holiday. Since then, the celebrations have slowly spread around the world.

The lack of commercial popularity of International Friendship Day is a mystery. Although not as old as Mother’s Day (1870), the holiday predates the official Father’s Day by 30 years (1966). Maybe it’s the placement of events, in the dog days of summer. Or the competition for attention with other August celebrations like National Catfish Month and National Foot Health Month?

But the day went unnoticed long enough. We would never think of ignoring our mothers and fathers or their special days. Why shouldn’t we take this excuse to celebrate our friends?

Here are ten tips to celebrate International Friendship Day August 5, 2007:

1. Remember algebra. Send or email an old photo to a friend from high school.

2. Reconnect with humanity. Give your ears a rest for a whole day and recognize the people (friends and potential friends) around you – on your commute, in the office, in your living room – by unplugging your iPod and other personal players.

3. Share the sweat. Invite a friend while you walk or jog today.

4. Don’t hit send Call a friend on the phone that you would normally email and have a chat. If they’re at your office or in your area code, get together for a quick cup of coffee or a walk.

5. Lose face of the city. Smile and say hello or hello to every person you meet on a jog or walk today. (If jogging in a busy city, limit it to other joggers and walkers…)

6. Food and outlet. Invite your mom/sister/dad and her best friend to lunch, pay the bill in advance, and leave them alone to catch up.

7. Make a new friend. Have a meeting today – business, Weight Watchers, swimming your kids? Invite someone you see at this meeting to meet again. Be sure to include a date, time and venue. Do not settle for some time.
