Baby and Toddlers – Choking Hazards

After your toddler feeds pureed baby food, they will have more texture to grow. With a rapidly increasing compliment to their teeth, they are ready to enter a whole new world of food experience. Even at this time there are still some foods that should stay off limits for your little one because they can be a choking hazard.

Several factors may combine to make your toddler more subject to choking on food than older children and adults. Even when they have a full set of teeth, chewing and swallowing are still cool; they are also likely to gulp food when they are eager to return to play. Sometimes they tend to eat while running.

To minimize the risk of choking, you should keep these foods off limits for your toddler, with a few exceptions: hot dogs, unless you cut them lengthwise before cutting them across. Hard candy and marshmallows, nuts (especially peanuts), grapes and cherries, unless you remove the skin and seeds to reduce the risk. Firm cookies or crackers; you should choose melt in your mouth variety. Whole raw carrots, unless you cut them into small pieces, the same with apples. Other foods that pose a high choking risk are popcorn, peanut butter and spoons, beans and chickpeas (unless crushed), raw celery and raisins.

You can further reduce the risk of choking by insisting that your toddler eat sitting down. Eating while running and even walking, playing, lying down, or semi-short, can present a choking hazard. Since almost any food, including bread and pasta, can cause choking; All young children should be supervised while eating. You should prohibit your toddler from eating any food that can be choked on while in the car, especially if there is no adult present, other than the driver, who could possibly manage a choking incident. You should be more careful when you have applied teething gel to numb the gums. Until the anesthetic effects wear off, your child will be able to chew normally: so only soft foods should be offered. You also need to discourage talking or laughing with their mouths full. This rule will be easier to enforce if everyone in the family follows it.

Even with these precautions a small child can still get into trouble with choking. If your toddler is constantly coughing, breathing and crying, you should not interfere, however if they have been coughing forcefully for more than two to three minutes, then you need to call 911. If they become silent and struggling to breathe, it is. time to start rescue efforts.

First, if someone else is with you, call 911 for medical assistance. Also call 911 if you are not familiar with the emergency procedures, you should have them on the line even if you are familiar with the procedure just in case something happens. If your child wakes up then you need to kneel behind your child and wrap your arms around his waist. Make a fist with one hand and place the thumb down the center of the body, slightly above the navel and well below the rib cage. Grab your positioned fist with your other hand and press it into your child’s belly with a quick inward and upward thrust. Each of these thrusts should be a separate and distinct movement. Repeat this up to five times or when the object is expelled and your child is breathing normally.
