Dog Leash Training – How to Teach Your Puppy to Walk on Leash
All dogs – whether they trot on Manhattan’s Millionaire’s Row or run free in the countryside – should know how to walk on a leash. Learning how to control your animal using dog leash training is an important respect lesson for both of you, and should be used regularly to achieve the highest results.
Forget about fancy “heels,” where the dog’s shoulders line up perfectly with the dog-walker’s knees. We are talking here about a simple partnership in which the dog and the person on the other end of the leash can go out together into the fresh air without a big struggle.
1. Start by practicing it at home. Let the puppy look and smell the leash. Then attach it to its collar that should be well adjusted, but without pressing too much, making it comfortable.
2. With your puppy on your left side, hold a treat and the leash with your right hand. Your left hand should also hold the loose leash. Order the puppy to sit.
3. Start walking, starting with your left foot. When the puppy starts walking around you, give him the command “next to me”. If the dog takes the lead, move your left hand to the collar and slowly pull back from it, repeat it a couple of times.
4. When the puppy stays by your side, give him the treat and say “good”. Then command him to sit and repeat “good” when he does it. When the puppy obeys the sequence of commands, gradually increase the distance. Proper dog leash training will show your pet what is expected of him at all times, no matter what is thrown at him.
5. When a puppy can walk beside you and sit obediently as you go from one room to another, you can learn to turn right. Guide it with the right hand while giving the command “next to me”.
6. To make the puppy turn to the left, walk faster and hold the food in front of the puppy’s muzzle to slow it down. Hold the puppy next to your left leg and give him the “go on” command when he starts to slow down on his way.
Here are some problems you may encounter and their solutions:
recognize, you will have more control in almost any situation.
And remember, a little knowledge, a lot of patience, and positive training go a long way when training a pup to walk on a lead and are much better for your relationship with the pup. Do it with some love and you will know how fantastic dog leash training really is.
