Life Lessons I Learned from My Cat
Even if you are not a cat person, bear with me, as this story goes beyond cat mania. Our tabby kitten has been scared and very sensitive since the day we rescued her from the SPCA, two and a half years ago. No doubt in the prison for four months mess himself. As we came to learn the nature of “Shylo” we renamed it “Shybaby.”
Practice Patience, Breathing and Being
Extreme patience is the first virtue taught to us by Shybaby. We should stay still, with arms outstretched, fingers pointing at him, and wait for him to rub with our fingers many times before he would consider moving closer. Closer contact should move it, not us. If we run greetings then he ran out. (Often this time ritual was too much for our young boy!)
Still, if we, and particularly I (as I must admit that the kitten really grew to love me) were too impatient or too busy to spend time with him, Shybaby became more skittish and fearful. Intuitively he knew when I was lost in my hyper, anxious “I have a lot to do and a lot of time” state, like then, Shybaby ran out of my energy. Seeing this, I would stop, sit, and practice breathing and being with him – my “cat meditation.” As I calmed down, kitty calmed down.
Couldn’t we all benefit from a little more “cat meditation” in life? First, notice when we are driving ourselves anxious and then, practice patience with ourselves, and breathe with them?
Precious Present Moment
This sweet little soul taught me to treasure every moment. As usual, he jumped on my bed this morning – and surprisingly he knows the moment I open my eyes – to give me his loving greeting. I love his affection even more today and with a heavy heart knowing he has to die tomorrow. My girl’s cat is in the advanced stages of liver cancer, she won’t eat anymore, and there’s nothing we can do but love her.
So, this moment with him is very special because I know it will never happen again. Soon it will disappear forever from our lives. With bitter-sweet revelation I understand this is the truth in every single, present moment. We only have each moment now, this once, fully experience and enjoy it, and then it is gone forever. I’m sick of how carelessly we forget this – rushing to the next thing, burning with thoughts of the past and the future – missing the only moment we have!
Keep things in perspective
Also, I have my cat to thank for helping me keep things in perspective. Yes, there is a big wound in my heart knowing that cancer is raging in his body and soon he will go again, I am deeply grateful he is not one of us. Our lives have already been scarred by painful losses caused by cancer.
But now we are deeply grateful that my father-in-law seems to have won his last round with cancer. With great relief, we will no longer visit him in the cancer ward. I lost my kitten but my loved ones are here.
Do your best to keep loving, no matter what
Little Shybaby has barely eaten in over two weeks. Although a kitten, he used to have a round about him that is missing now. Although we know we can’t selfishly delay his death any longer – want another day of his sweetness – it’s so hard to let him go. I am amazed to see how this little animal – despite illness and lack of nutrition – seeks to be close to me and heals me with his loving purr even now. This is also Shybaby’s legacy of living a happy life: Do your best to keep loving, no matter what.
So let’s all remember the teachings of Shybaby, the wise little Zen master:
1. Practice patience in all things
2. Practice Breathing and Being
3. Live in the present precious moment
4. Keep things in perspective
5. Do your best to keep loving, no matter what
