Weaning: From Breastfeeding To Baby’s First Solid Food
The common concern for mothers with babies nearing the 6 month mark is not really about how to stop breastfeeding, but about what foods to feed babies. This especially wouldn’t be a problem for 2nd or 3rd time moms. But the first timers are usually protective of the children to research and ask around what the best food to eat would be.
Now don’t retort, I was a first time mom too. Actually, I feel worse than most mothers because I have two children, and I overprotected them both when they were babies. So I am responsible for all the research and gathering the information as well.
By weaning from breastfeeding, you are removing her from her source for most of her daily nutritional needs. While it is recommended that the baby breastfeed for as long as 2 years (and beyond), sometimes specific circumstances do not allow the breastfeeding relationship to last long. When this happens, you can check with your pediatrician to find out what formula you can use as a substitute.
When introducing the baby solid, a tip should be to introduce each new food four days apart from each other. This is to give your baby time to react to the new food – either in a good way (that he really, really likes it) or in a bad way (he develops a rash or an allergy to it).
To help you, here are some recommended foods for baby’s first food:
– Rice cereal for babies with enriched iron or dry baby rice. Dry cereal should be mixed with breast milk or formula to make a runny solution. About one to two teaspoons would do for the first meal; you can reduce the milk after a couple of days so that the mixture thickens and the baby feels some texture in his mouth. This would allow the baby to practice taking food from a spoon, which involves a different reflex than drinking milk from the breast or bottle.
– Pureed vegetables. Carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoes, zucchini and squash are great for purees. In addition, it introduces the baby to the wonderful world of new tastes. When the baby uses the baby rice mix, you can give him a new way to enjoy by adding this puree to the mix to add flavor.
– Pure fruit. These can be served on a bowl and accompanied by rubber tip spoon, or you can give this as a juice. Apples, pears, mangoes, papaya or mashed bananas are some fruits that are safe to give.
Feeding your baby will be another fun activity you can do with your growing baby.
Happy weaning!
