Innovate Your Baby: 4 Simple Things You Should Be Doing With Your Infant Today

I left a career as a corporate executive to focus on conceiving and raising my daughter. With this dramatic lifestyle change, I made a conscious decision to raise my daughter with innovation. Kids today have too many toys and gadgets they don’t use or appreciate. What they really want and need is their parents’ time, attention and help in fostering their natural curiosity.

I never considered documenting my daily activities with my daughter until I started hearing the same comments over and over again from people who met my daughter for the first time:

  • “He is so aware”
  • “Wow. He really looked you in the eyes.”
  • “He follows everything I do.”

I focus on simple, very practical activities with my daughter every day. There are many simple things parents can do with their babies that will provide significant benefits and require little else but time.

  • Look your baby in the eye. A lot. This sounds simple, but we don’t do it as much as we think. It is very easy to put your child in the swing or, in front of a video, while you are trying to do these things. In fact, it doesn’t take long to look your baby straight in the eye and talk to him.
  • Talk to your baby in his and your language. My mother actually encourages me to speak to my daughter in “her language”. I have read in developmental books that babies consider it a compliment and reinforcement of their values when you respond to sounds with the same sounds. I tried it and it was very fun and rewarding for both my daughter and me. He starts the babble and babble phase so I try to respond to his babble sound for sound. He loves it, smiles, and generally answers me back. We do this several times a day and it makes us both happy and smile. I also talk to him throughout the day in “my” language.
  • Show him how you do things. Starting first thing in the morning, I talk to my daughter asking her questions and explaining what’s going on. I tell her that we will change her diaper and then I will get dressed and make the bed while she plays in her crib. I show him the pillows before I put them on the bed. One of my favorite moments of the day is when I wash my face and my makeup. My daughter has gotten used to “helping” me, she sits and smiles in delight as we go through the process together. I take the cleaner and tell her what it is. I bent down and showed him the bottle and he smiled. He watched me wash my face. I explained the face cream I was using and showed him the bottle. I squeezed a little of the cream into my hand while he watched. I show her each type of makeup and tell her what I’m using it for. I tell him the color of the tube of mascara “orange”. I do the same while preparing breakfast. It is a beautiful and beautiful moment for us every day. I’m always amazed at how attentive and excited he is when I show him what’s going on.
  • Let him do what you are doing. When I’m cooking or baking, I try to have my daughter with me in the kitchen. I believe this has many short-term and long-term benefits. In the long run, I hope that he will develop a love for cooking and the feeling of happiness associated with being in the kitchen. Short term, we are spending time together and he is learning about food and how things work in the kitchen. This holiday, I made several holiday cookies and candies. My 5 month old daughter was in her swing or stroller with me. I showed him the sugar and flour and explained how we measured them. I gave him plastic cups to hold while I used the metal ones. To my surprise, he was very interested in the whole process and did not become fussy for some time (usually almost long enough to mix and bake a batch of cookies). Another example is breakfast reading the newspaper. Every morning, we sit together and have breakfast. My daughter “helps” me fix breakfast and then sits in her swing while I eat and read the paper. I talk to him and explain stories or announcements. It plays with some basic games. Once I’m done, we “fix” his cereal together. He likes to watch the water heat up in the microwave. She screamed in delight when I opened the door and saw the bowl. He watched in fascination as I smashed a banana. When he finished eating, I put him in my lap and let him “read” the paper. He happily grabs a section, crinkles it up, waves it, tears it and squeals in pleasure. I wouldn’t trade these mornings for anything.

These simple things take a little extra time each day, but they will pay off when you start to see your baby respond. The list of activities you can do with your child is limited only by your imagination and most of these activities require little or no financial investment. Most importantly, have fun! Use your imagination and share some innovative time with your baby today.
