Tips For Losing Pregnancy Weight

Diaper bag…check, Wipes….check, stroller…check, baby…check, extended belly and buffalo buffalo??? check. πŸ™

If you have had children, unless you happen to have a trainer and a chef, or other people have a crazy high metabolism, then chances have experienced how difficult it can be to lose weight after pregnancy. Face it… your body just changed. It looks different, it hangs different, and you probably have fat in places you never knew existed before.

Many women simply accept these changes as just a part of their lives. Seriously, when you have a new baby, who really wants to focus on getting back in shape? You have this cute little person to look at and play with all day. Who wants to take time away from their babies to exercise???

But does it really have to be that way? Do you really have to choose one or the other? Do you really have to change everything about your life to finally get your body back?

I’m here to tell you that you CAN have both. Believe it or not, it doesn’t take that many changes to slowly accomplish your weight loss goals. The key is consistency; you can’t lose it overnight. And no matter what anyone says, including your OB, you should start your weight loss goals on your own timeline, not someone else’s.

Make sure you get the OK from your doctor before starting any weight loss program; 4-6 weeks after birth is a good rule.

Here are 7 tips I personally used to lose over 50 pounds after my first pregnancy:

1) Drink water like it’s going out of date.

Seriously. Especially if you are breastfeeding. I’ve heard people discredit how important water is by saying that you can overhydrate yourself, and while it’s theoretically possible, it’s far more likely that you’re dehydrated. You basically have to work, HARD, at getting super hydrated for it to happen. Pregnancy takes a toll on your body, and your body can’t fully recover without enough water. Your body also can’t focus on losing all that pregnancy weight without enough water as well. It takes water to lose your water weight in your system. So make sure you drink. Try to drink just old water too if you can stomach it; It is better not to drink the extra calories. Try drinking a large glass of cold water first thing in the morning right when you wake up. Not sure if it’s just my imagination or not, but I’ve found that doing this tends to rev up your system and prepare it to burn those calories.

2) Buy a baby and mom yoga DVD… and use it! πŸ™‚

I know for me, it can be very difficult to have a lot of “me” time. But when I have “me” time, the last thing I honestly want to do during it is exercise. I’d rather read a good book or take a bubble bath. That’s why I absolutely love the Yoga for Mom and Baby DVDs. Then you can get in your exercise while spending quality time with your baby. And Baby will love to look at your face and get you down with them too. It is truly a win-win. Better than waiting for the planets to align you can run to the gym.

3) Breastfeed if at all possible.

I was mortified to find out how many doctors told my friends, “Why go to the trouble of breastfeeding, it is just as healthy to eat formula, just as good for your body, and much more convenient,” when the facts are do not support this at all. I wish doctors would at least tell women all the facts and then let them decide. If they still choose formula then that is their prerogative. But they should have all the facts first.

So what does breastfeeding have to do with it? pregnancy weight loss? A lot. Not only does it have the best natural nutrients for your growing baby, but it also takes about 500 extra calories to produce the milk in the first place. Also, breastfeeding helps the uterus contract and shrink back to its original size faster, minimizing how long you still look pregnant after giving birth. If that’s not motivation enough, consider this; the only vitamin “missing” in breast milk is Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin (because most mothers are missing it, not because breast milk doesn’t have enough). What is a great reason to make sure you get out the stroller and go for a walk in the park to make sure that both you and baby get their share of sunlight? Best of all, since breastfeeding has been shown to boost your child’s immune system, you’ll spend less time dealing with ear infections and colds, and more days chasing after your kids and taking them outside, helping melt that fat away.

As far as the formulas were more practical? I can’t speak for everyone, but I love the fact that there are no bottles to clean, no nipples to hold, no formula to mix, no formula to run to the store, no trash, no . clean, and most of all, hardly any spit up. Also, once you get the hang of it, you can breastfeed virtually anywhere without anyone being the wiser.

Ok, I think I’ll stop rambling now… πŸ™‚ It really really helps to get things going though.

4) Walk!!!

Not enough can be said about the market. It really doesn’t get the attention it deserves. So many people will tell you that it takes exercising your butt off 5 days a week on a bowflex or in the gym to get back in shape. That’s just not true. Believe it or not, your body wants to return to its pre-pregnancy weight. So just moving is enough to make things go. Be sure to start slowly. Every little bit helps. Try to take the stairs more, or park further away from the store. You can even walk around the perimeter of the grocery store before you start shopping, or do rounds in your living room while the baby takes a nap. If you need an extra boost, why not bring your little one instead of using the stroller occasionally. Just one hour of carrying a 15-pound baby burns 246 calories for a 155-pound woman. This can easily happen if you just break this in a few extra minutes throughout the day.

5) Continue taking your prenatal.

Taking your vitamins helps give your body everything it needs to lose pregnancy weight. With the lack of sleep and time that comes with being a new mom, it’s easy to not get all the nutrients you need from your diet. Your body needs to know that it has all the vitamins it needs on a daily basis before it will let go of all the stores it created for your pregnancy. Taking your vitamins every day helps ensure that it does. Which vitamins in particular help? He thought that Vitamin E, Chromium Picolinate, and Vitamin B complex help to help him lose weight; so make sure whatever prenatal you choose includes these essential vitamins.

6) Eat more fiber and good fats.

Instead of taking stool softeners and laxatives, be sure to eat extra fruit as well. No, carbs won’t kill you. πŸ™‚ Fruit is good for you!! Also, try buying some ground flaxseed and adding it to your yogurt, cereal, oatmeal, or even pancake mix. When you’re back, and you feel bloated, you don’t want to exercise or move. So do your body a favor and get more fiber!

7) Get rid of all the artificial crap!!!!

Stick to low-fat margarine, stay away from low-calorie snack cakes, and spit out diet coke. Have you ever noticed that most people who eat all these things gain weight??? It is far better to eat a little real butter, than slab on a multitude of low-calorie margarine that is nothing more than hydrogenated oil. However, if you strive to be both thin and healthy, so you can run around with your new bundle of joy and live a long healthy life, then do yourself a favor and stop drinking all drinks their diet. Get hooked on water, natural tea, or even smoothies made with honey. Your body will thank you later.

It can be quite difficult to lose those extra pregnancy pounds. Hopefully these few tips will help get you on your way to your own weight loss and fitness goals. Just remember to start slow, focus more on just getting some form of exercise at least 30 minutes or so a day, not on training for the Iron Man.
