Should You Use Chlorine Free Baby Diapers?

I have to admit that, as a new parent, I wasn’t too concerned about too many things. Well, I’ll still admit: I’m pretty laid back. In fact, I have friends who would definitely categorize me as someone who is under concerned- things don’t phase me even when they should. However, as an experienced parent (thirteen years now!) I have found that some things just trigger my mama-bear instinct and get me going. For example, I had quite the trip with diapers, using just about everything in the book, from cloth, standard disposable and chlorine free baby diapers. I learned a lot along the way, becoming an expert on all things diaper related. As a new parent, making this decision can seem confusing. Let me help you understand the issues involved.

Disposable diapers

I will openly admit that I started my parenting journey by pretty much following the crowd. I was still breastfeeding, but even that barely qualified, as this is pretty standard in my neck of the woods. Diapers, however, are all disposable, all the time. So that’s what I did. I have to just come right out and say that I love the convenience that they offer. What I hate is the cost and the environmental impact. Plus, my first son just couldn’t figure out how to potty train. Go figure- the kid couldn’t tell when he was wet! These problems led me to explore options such as chlorine free baby diapers and cloths.

Cloth diapers

I started getting into cloth diapers when my oldest was about a year and a half. We were classic newlyweds and, well, just plain broken up. Plus, I just took up sewing in a very serious way, so it made a lot of sense. I have used cloth diapers over the years with all my children, as well as the chlorine free diapers that we will discuss later, but there are definitely problems, the biggest being that several of my children have very sensitive skin. Being exposed to this amount of moisture leads to problems and rashes. I personally did not find them difficult to clean, but many parents use bleach, which kind of cancels the beautiful environment of using cloth.

For me, this option was one of the best compromises. I don’t need to mess with the hassle (however small) of packing, changing and washing cloth diapers, but I still get the priority of caring for the environment. Plus, no more rashes! I can’t tell you how sad it is to deal with consistent diaper rash. I just can’t do that to my baby, so the fabric had to go for good with some of my kids. For some parents, however, they find that using a combination makes sense. For example, household cloth and chlorine-free baby diapers for the night and when on trips. This keeps costs down, while still providing the convenience and flexibility that you need. Plus, these keep my baby dry, but not so absorbent that I have trouble with potty training.
