Baby Sleep Problems – Getting Baby to Sleep Through the Night

It is a very common problem when babies have a hard time falling asleep and sleeping through the night. Hopefully, this article will help new parents find a solution to this serious problem that affects all families.

As a mother of three adorable children (one of whom is still a toddler), I know how difficult it is for new parents to deal with sleep issues. All of my children, as infants, had difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep through the night. After many sleepless nights my husband and I were depressed, exhausted and a constant sleep deprivation. Our friends’ babies had already slept through the night, but not my first daughter. Trying to find solutions I read many books, looking for answers. I found many proven attitudes and time tested techniques that worked well with my babies. Here are some of them:

  • You should not force a baby to sleep. Sleep should be a pleasant state to enter and safe enough to stay. A parent’s goal should be to help the baby develop a healthy attitude toward sleep.
  • Try to avoid advice that recommends letting your baby “cry it out”, especially in the first six months. It can hurt to develop a sense of trust between baby and parent.
  • Be flexible, because no technique works all the time for all babies. If specific techniques don’t work for your family, skip them. Every baby has different nighttime temperament. What doesn’t work one week may work the next. That’s why it’s so important to follow your heart. Eventually you will find the best solution.
  • Breastfed babies need to feed more often than bottle-fed babies, usually every two to three hours. This prevents them from sleeping soundly at night until they are three to seven months old.

You can try these sleep improvements that have worked for my children:

  1. Maintain proper room temperature and humidity. The best are around 69 F and 50% of humidity. Dry air can cause stuffy noses and lead to increased incidences of allergies among babies. All these things can disturb the baby’s sleep.
  2. When you put the baby to sleep create darkness in a room. Try not to turn on lights or the TV while feeding him.
  3. It is very important to recreate a comfortable environment, well suited to that of the womb where the baby spent nine months. So, if your baby seems uncomfortable in the crib, try using a bassinet, bassinet, or stroller to provide a snug fit. Swaddling or wrapping your baby can make him feel more comfortable, secure and prevent jerky movements that can wake him up. It is also useful for soothing some colicky babies.
  4. Try rocking your baby to sleep in a rocking chair. Walking with baby and massaging or patting him while singing lullabies can be very soothing.
  5. Sometimes sleeping without noise can be difficult, because during nine months babies get used to the sound of the mother’s womb. So help your baby fall asleep by turning on a fan, an air conditioner, a vacuum cleaner or a music mobile that imitates womb sounds like white-noise machines.
  6. Swinging can be helpful, especially with high-maintenance babies. A monotonous movement can be more sleep inducing routine.
  7. Another good alternative is to drive in a car until the baby falls asleep. Cold night air and constant movement help the baby to calm down.
  8. For some babies it is helpful to put them in slings or carriers and carry them around the house. Rocking will help your baby settle.
  9. It is very important to create a consistent bedtime routine. With familiar rituals babies go to sleep easier and sleep longer. For example, bedtime rituals of hot bath, massage, rocking, eating, singing and etc. can teach him anticipation and help them fall asleep.

Pay close attention to medical causes of sleep. If you are trying all these techniques and nothing works for you be aware of different medical conditions that can interfere with sleep, such as Gastro Esophageal Reflux (GER), respiratory problems or various allergies. Discuss this with your pediatrician to find the right solution. In conclusion, all of the above techniques will not only help get your baby to sleep, but also create a healthy, positive attitude toward sleep that lasts a lifetime. The baby will learn that sleep is a pleasant state to enter and a safe state to stay. Good sleep habits will make happy not only the baby, but also the parents.
