Trying to find solutions I read many books, looking for answers. I found many proven attitudes and time tested techniques that worked well with my babies. Here are some of them:
- You should not force a baby to sleep. Sleep should be a pleasant state to enter and safe enough to stay. A parent’s goal should be to help the baby develop a healthy attitude toward sleep.
- Try to avoid advice that recommends letting your baby “cry it out”, especially in the first six months. It can hurt to develop a sense of trust between baby and parent.
- Be flexible, because no technique works all the time for all babies. If specific techniques don’t work for your family, skip them. Every baby has different nighttime temperament. What doesn’t work one week may work the next. That’s why it’s so important to follow your heart. Eventually you will find the best solution.
- Breastfed babies need to feed more often than bottle-fed babies, usually every two to three hours. This prevents them from sleeping soundly at night until they are three to seven months old.
