Tips on What to Do When Baby Won’t Sleep

When your baby cries all night or wakes up at all hours, it interrupts the sleep you need to get the rest you and your baby need. Establishing an effective bedtime routine is one way to help set a baby’s sleep patterns which leads to a happier and more content child who is more likely to sleep through the night. Here’s how.

We are all creatures of habit. For example, you can usually wake up every morning at 7 am, start the coffee preparation, jump in the shower, get dressed, prepare a light breakfast and take the time to have a cup of hot coffee before you grab your bag and go. work But what if your alarm doesn’t go off until 7:30? Your routine is off and it often sets a different tone for the whole day. We function best with some consistency in routine—and so does your baby.

Solving your baby’s sleep problems can be as easy as establishing a regular routine to teach your baby to sleep through the night. Start with these ideas:

Quiet surroundings.

Too much stimulation for your child before sleep will make it difficult for you to put your baby to bed easily. As bedtime approaches, turn down activities around the house, including the volume of the television and the sound of your voice.

Engage in a calming activity.

Your baby’s sleep routine could start with giving him something as simple as a warm, soothing bath. A quiet activity you can do every night will soon become something your baby associates with bedtime.

Dim the lights.

By making a noticeable change in the lighting in your home or baby’s room, you are giving your baby a visual cue that bedtime is approaching.

Dress (your baby) for success (at bedtime).

A final change of diapers and dressing your little one to sleep is another sign that bedtime is near.

Enter and provide comfort and assurance.

Instead of rocking the baby to sleep, put him in the crib and sit nearby. You can play soft music, read a story or sing a soft lullaby. If the baby starts fussing, gently caress the face and head for reassurance, but try to avoid taking the child out of the crib. The goal is to make him or her familiar with the environment, including him alone in the crib.

The routine above is just a suggestion. What is important is that you establish a routine that you can follow night after night that allows your baby to gradually “wind down” from the day’s activities and pave the way for a restful sleep. Since babies and toddlers are creatures of habit (just like adults) the predictability of a routine will settle your baby faster and increase the chances that he’ll sleep through the night, and so can you.
