In town I met a group of young children. If you were less charitable you could describe them as a gang, but they were not threatening or intimidating so ‘group’ is an appropriate description. The sun was so bright that they were difficult to identify.

As they got closer, one of them let out a scream and ran to me… Trouble at the store? No, not at all! It was a happy 11-year-old boy throwing his arms around an old man he knew and loved very much. ‘Long time no see Mrs Marsden’… It was Jack, a former pupil…

He proudly said that he is doing brilliantly in school and how he is looking forward to transferring to high school later this year. Well, apart from having to wear a jumper and a tie! Jack explained how many friends he has – another thing that gives him a lot of fun. The group he was with was obviously happy in his company.

How do I know Jack?

Jack was a disaster a few years ago and was kicked out of Infant School because of his violence, confrontation and disorder. The teachers could not do something with him. He was only 6 years old and a virtual write in school. The teachers were in despair – no matter what they did there was no impact on his terrible behavior.

In came the ‘Uncle Tom Cobley and all’ brigade and after many meetings and failed behavior management advice, Jack pointed in another direction… A behavior unit…

Jack’s first day was a problem for him… When asked where his reading book was, his answer would be anatomically impossible! The reaction of his answer told him, very clearly, that these languages ​​would not be allowed and if he wanted to get well, then it would be better to modify his language and behavior very quickly! It was very obvious that no one had ever confronted his behavior before. He got a very clear message that he had better improve his attitude.

But once they solved a problem and Jack soon learned that he was done with. As long as he did the right thing he would receive plenty of encouragement and reassurance. Follow the very simple rules and life would be good.

Jack couldn’t read very well at all and when you gave him any math task he would literally shake with fear – I’ve never seen a child react so negatively. He had deep-seated fears that needed to be recognized and dealt with. Adults should be unfailingly understanding when any child has educational difficulties but there should be no tolerance for misbehavior. Adults should refuse to make excuses for bad behavior and stop it in its tracks before it has a chance to catch on at school – or anywhere else for that matter!

There is no magic in managing children’s behavior. It is a matter of following the right behavior management strategy, at the right time and in the right way. So, is Jack an unintelligent child? Absolutely not – but he was not well educated and thus typical of many children who demonstrate serious behavioral problems. He couldn’t do basic tasks, he was frustrated and falling behind with his learning every day he was at school.

Now Jack found himself in class where there was no tolerance for any horrible behavior – a euphemism for being strict? But he also realized that the adults wanted to work with him to alleviate many of his fears about learning. He expected to work hard and alone but he started to see good results.

What was Jack’s response to this new experience? He flourished and began to enjoy learning. This was not transferred to his mainstream school at first as this could only happen when adults in the mainstream learn how to manage behavior effectively. Adults had to learn how to control and manage his behavior – something they would have failed to do before.

So welcoming Jack to ‘a strict teacher’ in today’s meeting was a perfect example of a child’s long-term reaction to having boundaries and limits placed on their behavior. A totally positive reaction with a child who greets you with open arms – and in front of his friends! What a potential risk to the group he stands with his friends!

Children desperately need to set limits and boundaries on their behavior. The teachers could have prevented much of Jack’s misery by dealing with him long before his behavior spiraled totally out of control. In fact, they should take action as soon as he started to misbehave.

Any teacher can learn to deal with the Jacks of this world – or better still prevent them from becoming like Jack was in infant school. That’s for adults. It is the responsibility of adults to protect their children from growing up without the essential discipline that allows them to mature with confidence and the right level of self-assurance. All adults should be able to manage children’s behavior confidently and effectively – it really isn’t difficult.
